Beheaded American - more to the story?

This is from CNN.com

One government official said Berg had earlier been arrested by Iraqi police in a sweep and detained by coalition authorities. Those authorities contacted the FBI, which interviewed Berg, the source said.

Berg was released when authorities realized he was in Iraq legally, the source said. He was in the process of leaving Iraq when he was taken captive by insurgents.

Iiraqi police set him up maybe? Arranged to have him killed?

Jewish sounding last name provoked Iraqi police?

Something smells weird. Why him? Why not one of the other 10000000 contractors there?

The Iraqi's said that they "attempted" to exchange him for American prisoners, and that the beheading was in retaliation to the recent POW "abuse"

The iraqi "police" and the insurgents are almost the same people. No soldier trusts ANY member of any iraqi government.

I bet he was SOLD to the terrorists who wanted to make a video and make a point. Being a civilian he was easy to grab w/o having to encounter heavy us gunfire trying to nab a soldier.

the timing of this incident is suspiciously convenient for the allies, in light of the current media frenzy over prisoner abuse

It's one historical truth for the past few decades: whenever something happens in the media to put our President or our government in a bad light, something happens in the middle east to pull the media away. The two go hand in hand, you could bet on it and win every time...

Wrong. The Iraqi police turned him over to the US Military which illegally detained him for 13 days and he was not released until his family sued the military. From this morning's Chicago Trib:

"A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Berg was in Iraq "of his own accord" and had been advised to leave Iraq but refused. The official refused to elaborate but promised more information later Wednesday.

According to his family, Berg, a small telecommunications business owner, spoke to his parents on March 24 and told them he would return home on March 30. But he was detained by Iraqi police at a checkpoint in Mosul on March 24.

Berg was turned over to U.S. officials and detained for 13 days. His father, Michael, said his son wasn't allowed to make phone calls or contact a lawyer. On April 5, the Bergs filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending that their son was being held illegally by the U.S. military. The next day Berg was released. He told his parents he hadn't been mistreated. His family last heard from him April 9 but it was unclear when and where he was abducted."
