the reason our forefathers wanted seperation from church and state is because in england people were jailed for not worshiping as christians, and they wanted the freedom to worship (or not) freely and the best (only) way to ensure this is to seperate church from state

I believe you are mistaken. I believe they were jailed for not being worshiping as Catholics. I believe in freedom too. I don't think the govt should interfere or force people to worship. But I don't think that our forefathers would have minded the 10 commandments on the courthouse steps.

at the time of its drafting, an "establishment of religion" meant preference by government of one or more religions over others...

the first congress...which proposed the first amendment for ratification by the states...also appointed chaplains for the house, senate, and the armed forces...

early congresses regularly petitioned the president to issue Thanksgiving Day proclamations addressed to God...

the framers and ratifiers could not have envisioned that a supreme court sitting in a courtroom with a painting of Moses and the Ten Commandments to prohibit the display of them in a state courthouse...
