I found it -- one of my neighbors left a small trash bag by her back door, something in it was reeking to high heaven. I got tired of smelling it, carried it out, and voila no more smell.

It wasn't heavy enough for a human head...

You do know that she will now think that your building has garbage service and from now on will leave her trash to fester in the hall.
