Who has SUCCESSFULLY quit smoking?

I smoked from the time I was a teen till I was 25 or so........one day I just decided "fuck smoking" and I quit......I think had a few a year later at a wedding, but, that was it......
wasn't hard for me........

I was a pack and a half for about 4 years and then, after three tries quit cold turkey.

My method was to start running again, a lot. I found that retching and vomiting at the end of a run and having to hawk up horrific lungers while trying to impress cute boys (and girls) in the park was a pretty good motivator. The headaches stopped after a week or two, the weight gain after a month or two (luckily, the running helped keep that under control), and the dreams of smoking that left me waking up in a cold sweat trying to remember if'd really done it or not only lasted like 5 years, lol.

Good luck!

Only thing is, when i have to go for a s**t, i need a cigarette. It's like a laxative for me.

this is such a good feeling...

I need to quit, I admit. been on the the Marlboros for like 7 years and I aint even 25 yet! when it happens, it will happen. :(

My friend successfully quit smoking a few months ago. He was telling me how he was going to go outside for a smoke. I called him a dumb bitch addict who was praying for death by age 40. He said that he wasn't addicted and that he smokes because he chooses. I told him bullshit.

What did he do?

Went outside.

Smoked his cigarette.

Came back in.

"Ok, there, I've officially quit smoking."

Mother fucker hasn't had a cigarette in MONTHS.

That's the only way to do it. To hell with those stupid patches and 12 step programs.

I'd rather die of lung cancer than go through the horror of quitting again, which I did about 15 years ago. My motivation -- besides a persistent cough -- was caring for a friend who was dying at the time. There he was having an agonizing death, and he was telling me with his dying breaths that I was an idiot for smoking. It made an impression.

Cold turkey was the only thing that worked for me. I'd made earlier attempts with everything from hypnosis, that horrible chewing gum, some incredibly expensive detox program, etc.

The main thing I suggest -- if you've had a serious longterm habit -- is cutting yourself a LOT of slack. Just give yourself permission to be a hateful s.o.b for a month or two. I was editing a city magazine at the time and basically had to turn it over to my assistant for a month. I couldn't think straight. And then there was the day I put my fist through the wall. I was not pleasant to be around. In fact, friends would leave cigarettes on my doorstep.... I don't drink, either, but quitting that was a piece of cake compared to giving up cigarettes.

Good luck!

Wouldn't something like "rationing" smokes work? Like if you typically smoke 20 or so a day (sounds like a massive number to me, but I'm sure there are people who can look at that and go "20? Lol... pussy"), maybe reduce that number each week until the desire is eventually gone. Like 20 a day first week, 15 a day second week, 10, 4, 5, 3, 2, 1, 0 (lol, looks like a cycle prescription or something).

Or just add up all the money you spend on smokes to shock you into quitting. I calculated my friend's annual spending on cigarettes before he quit. Came out to about $1,500 a year. $1,500 a year into a modest mutual fund = over $2 million bucks by retirement age. Think about it.

I was a 2 pack a day smoker sinceI was 16.....2 years back I quit...pretty much cold-turkey. Yes....I was a bit moody  for a would say about 2 weeks but stuck with it. Do I still crave them......YES!! Every now and then I will break down and have one....especially if I at the bar....or tipping back the beer pretty heavy. Other than that....I have been very committed. :)

It was not an easy thing to do however, and if you are planning on quitting you have to really want it for yourself and not because another person if forcing you into it. My ex for years would "suggest" I quit....and the rebel in me only wanted to have one more.

Best of luck to you~~~

Quit while you are still young. I take care of patients that are dying from lung cancer and emphyzema and it's not pretty to hear or watch them hack and cough up stuff.

I quit 7 1/2 years ago. I was smoking 1 1/2 packs a day and chewing 1- 1 1/2 tins of dip a day. Got an inflamed esophagus 2 times. Dr. said it was from the tobacco use so I got so scared I quit cold.
To help chew lots of sugarless gum. It keeps your mouth occupied.
