Would you prefer a practitioner, therapist, doctor to have....

A "Therapist" doesnt even need any sort of medical degree or doctorate. You get all kinds...ive heard of people going to marriage counseling and the therapist goes all rogue and they got divorced. Others have gone and were able to resolve issues and be better people in their marriage. Scary!
As far as what I would choose, well Id rather have someone who put years into nursing and then became a PA, for "general" medical stuff. I've had to pretty much direct some doctors who dismissed my "headaches, confusion, memory loss, exhaustion" in the begining they were saying "your in great shape, I wish I was as healthy as you...its (anxiety, not enough sleep, stress, caffeine, etc. etc.) In the end I MADE them do an mri...next morning shit hit the fan....ooops guess no one thought it could be a brain tumor! After that I wasnt playing around, doctors in Columbus were saying "umm we need to crack your dome or your gonna peace out" Went to The Cleveland Clinic...one of top 10 brain surgeons, everyone else all stars...No Surgery (inoperable) but never waivered and never made me feel I wasnt going to keep paying taxes! chemo, and drugs...tumor is benign, (not cancer) And now Im here replying to a thread and getting ready to do shoulders!

Well as a 45 yr old woman you may be missing out on good therapists by rejecting them based on their age, again age doesnt make you wise... not only have I been to AA/NA meetings, I've actually been the center therapist for them, at age 19 I did a 4 month internship and worked in a substance abuse center, organized their meetings, daily activities, directed their sessions, etc. so yes I do not what it is about.
At age 22 I worked in a center that took patients from across the world and with cognitive and behaviorism therapy we worked on key elements such as the origin of their addiction, how it affects them and those around them, assignments for dealing with people around you who are still consuming, building support systems to avoid relapse, building strategies for dealing with the desire to consume and so much more...

So at what age does one reach that old & wise plateau?

I know I've didn't miss out cause I am telling you, I cannot share and commit my healing to a younger person. It's not me!

And kudos to you for getting in the trenches of addiction. Most therapist have had one course on addiction and they are treating addiction. It's insane!

Can't tell you at what age, all I can say is you'll know.

I've had Plunky blocked for weeks but I am sure his comment is insulting and ignorant. It thrills me to know that I get under his skin so much, he needs to EF stalk me and continue to make comments towards me.
Such a little "man" you are.....really!

This pleases me, as it makes me feel free to be more direct.

For example, when I read the OP my first thought was: "Say it ain't so! You mean YOU have sought psychological help??? You??? Who would have thought it?".

But see, I didn't because I thought you might be reading my posts. So this way I feel better.

Some life experience under their belt or who only have "book" knowledge of the things they are tying to teach you?

I saw a therapist years ago for panic attacks. He was so "matter of fact" like he had NO clue what he was saying. One day I asked him if he ever even had a panic attack and he said he never did. I knew at that point, no amount of his medical school knowledge was going to heal me.
It's when I found a therapist who walked the walk and talked the talk, is when I regained my stamina.

I feel my work is more effective because I've walked the walk. I've had and have illness, panic disorder and been in horrible situations that I fought my way out of so I am able to pass the wisdom along.
I have a client with agoraphobia who has not left her house in 3 yrs. After the first time seeing her, she left her house. She told me she's been seeing a therapist in her home for 2 yrs, but this therapist had no idea how panic felt.

For me, I like healing with those who took the journey and made it to the other side and can pay it forward. But that's me.

Discuss......

I believe many therapist don't want to cut to the chase and give you a condensed version of getting better

many wood like to use the line "pay the girl on your way out" indefinitely

just sayin'

Not that there's no value in psychoanalysis...

But, I'm from the school that believes there is not a rigid connection between your feelings and your actions. They can be decoupled.

Therefore, you do not need to understand the root cause of your problems to "get better".

That is some story. Wow! Happy you found out before it got worse.

knot sure wut u mean

I believe sum peeps have a greater propensity to experience depression/anxiety disorders cuz they're wired that way

Probably the most startling finding was that identical twins who had been reared apart were every bit as similar to one another as identicals that had always been reared together, and more similar than fraternals whether raised together or apart.

Degenerative joint disease works the same way!

It's all in the genes.
