Site issue- abcess?

I could really use some solid advice on this:

First time injecting quads (usually go Glutes and Delts)- everything was sterile, used just under 2.5 of Primo (23g 1.5). The next day I had a body fever and the area started to swell. The fever was gone on day 2 but the injection area has a red patch the size of my palm and it's hot and hurts like hell- swollen and I can't fully bend my leg.

What concerns me is the redness and the heat...I've been putting hot compresses on it. Could it be too much gear (2.5)as my quads are a bit small? I'm thinking of waiting another day or two and then having it checked out (Vitamin b-12 excuse). Any help is much appreciated- thanks.

I would say give it a couple days. Sometimes your body just has a reaction to shooting something foreign into it. Take your temp, also do you see any red streaks? Red streaks are a sign of blood infection.

Also massage the area even if painful bite the bullet and massage.

Thanks- Nah- no red streaks. This is day 3 and the pain has subsided some after the hot compresses, but the red area is growing and it's still hot. My temp is fine, though.

I was under the impression that an abcess occurs when the gear ends up between the muscle and fat layers. I stuck this with a 1.5 and went deep- seemed like a good inject. I found a handful of amoxocillan but not enough for a week...really would like to avoid the doc if possible, but I also don't want things to get out of hand either. I'm thinking I'll give it 1 more day.

Abscess happens from germs, and it makes no difference where you inject (fat or muscle).
You are better off taking antibiotics. Don't take a chance. You don't want to have an ugly scar from drainage of abscess. If the redness is increasing after 3 days, then the probability of infection is higher.
Abscess is most commonly caused by staph and 95% staph is resistant to amoxicillin. Keflex 500 mg every 8 hours should be OK.

if it was red and swollen...no problem cuz thats normal...but hot to the touch is bad...usually very bad if not taken care of soon enough...you need to see the doc and get on some antibiotics before it gets out of hand

Ah geez...was so careful- wiped everything. I can't even walk on the leg- it's growing, areawise, in redness and it's still hot to the touch. No fever though...strange. I'm gonna give it until tomorrow morning and then see the doc. I only have 4 Amoxicillian left from an overseas trip. I heard that Honey and Encinachea are effective as well. Should I do the 4 once every 12 hours?

Thanks for all the help..

Fever usually happens when infection is in blood, and especially chills is a bad sign.
Localised infection may or may not cause fever.
Usual dose of Amoxicillin is 500 mg every 8 hours.

This is the best 'no touch' method:
Takle an empty hair-spray bottle. Wash it well with hot water. Then fill it with rubbing alcohol.
Spray the area of injection (about 2 inches) with rubbing alcohol.
Wait for 1-2 minutes to let it work.
If you are using rubber-top vial, spray vial top with rubbing alcohol.
The advantage of spray over alcohol swab is that your fingers never touch anything (you have 10,000 bacteria per square inch of your skin).
Tear an alcohol swab on the edges, try your best not to touch it.
Inject. Never, ever wipe sterile needle with alcohol swab. Sterile needs must remain UNTOUCHED till it hits the skin.
Pick the alcohol swab in a way that your fingers only touch one side. The other side remains untouched.
Rub the untouched side of alcohol swab on injection site.
Cover it by a band aid (your fingers should not touch the center area of the band aid).

You can also spray alcobol on your fingers; it the best, cheapest hand sanitizer. All hand sanitizers use alcohol as antiseptic.

I just realized your original post said to use Cephalexin instead of Amoxicillan...I had the leftover amoxicillan (date still good) but I'm assuming that's pointless with this type of infection then...

As far as the sterility: I lay out everything first- with the alcohol pads already opened so I can take them out without touching the wrapper. I wipe the Vial top and injection site with different pads. I change out the needle without touching anything, and I hold a pad to the injection site with slight pressure after poking, until I put a band-aid on it. You never know what's floating around in the air during the time the needle is exposed, though...

Thanks again..

I have gotten fever chills and swells from high BA ,site was hot to the touch and inj. has not been the most sterile (I know not a good Idea) but the symptoms always went away within a couple days. And this situation has been repeated many many times. It not a big deal (for me anyway)
