My house got robbed last night while I was home

I was upstairs sleeping and someone entered through a door downstairs and stole about $3500.00 worth of electronics including my 40" LCD TV. I didn't hear a thing thanks to sleep apnea. I am sleeping with a CPAP every night and I can't hear too well with the machine on. I just sold my guns a couple of months ago. I'm going to have to buy another one to keep by the bed. I'm thinking of a .357 magnum with a 4 or 5 inch barrel. I was looking at a Taurus .357 today. I want a revolver because they are so easy to operate that I won't screw up in a moment of panic. I think a 4" barrel is needed for accuracy. The dealer was asking $500 for the Taurus. I thought that was a little bit high. I don't know, maybe they plan on people haggling over the price with them.

This all sucks so bad. I'm afraid to go to sleep now. I know most guys will talk macho shit about how much ass they would kick if someone broke into their home but when it really happens it scares the shit out of you. I suspect that more than one person entered. Even though that TV is a LCD model and only weighs 35 kilos, it is still too long and bulky for one person to carry a long distance. There was no place to drive a vehicle near where they exited so they had to carry it around to the front of the building which would make the trip at least 40 meters. They also took 3 camcorders and two still cameras. The worst part is that one of the camcorders has a video of my 3 month old nephew that's priceless. I'm insured for full replacement value with a $500 deductible. Unfortunately that doesn't get the baby video back :bawling:

u live in the hood or something?? If they're breaking in at night, they're fully expecting someone to be there so i'm sure they're all ready with their own weapons.

r

I'd keep my eyes open over the next few weeks on electronics on ebay and craigstlist...etc. in your area. That really sucks but at least you know it won't happen again! Pretty balsy to rob a grown man while he's home.... young female, elderly I understand.... Real sorry about that baby video :( That really sucks.

fuck spending money on a gun. It is cheaper to buy several bear traps and place them around downstairs. Once that slams on their leg, you will have them, any guns they drop, and possibly one decent NIKE Air Jordan shoe as well.

Nah.

Someone broke into my house when I was still 17 and living with my parents. I was downstairs watching television and I heard my mom screaming and being dragged down the stairs. Laid the boots to this guy after that. The old man woke up and stood on the guy's neck until the cops showed up. The old man was still in his underwear when the cops got there...lol.

Apparently this was the third house on our street this guy had broken into. He broke into the cop's house across the way and put a knife to the cop's wife's throat while she was sleeping and her hubby was away working graveyards. Fucking pos got what he deserved, a severe beating and jail time.

Another time we caught someone breaking into our garage. Same scenario except he ended up eating gravel from the old driveway. The cops looked at him covered in blood and said
It looks like he fell down a couple times.
That was the end of that and my parents left that shitty neighbourhood.

Sorry to hear about your break-in man....it does fuck with your sense of security.

thats why i have a security system. id sleep through a break in too. sucks but at least nothing violent went down.

My security system is the best money I've spent in my home. Its worth every penny, I'd never live in a house without one

to the original poster: I'd get a security system ASAP. When my house was broken into, they came back two weeks later to finish the job! The cops told me that was normal! I dont want to freak you out or anything but ADT will install a basic security system for cheap and it only costs about 35 bucks a month for the monitoring.

Very true.

They get away with a small haul first because they are in a hurry, next case they already know whether or not there is an alarm, where other stuff is, if you have dogs, etc...

First time is a hit and run type burglary, next one is total wipe out, where they might bring more friends with them to carry more stuff away.

12 gauge shotguns will blow holes through walls, could kill a family member or someone outside (freakishly). go with a 20 gauge. you wont miss your target and if you do, you wont kill whoever maybe in another room.

a slug maybe but not buckshot. Buckshot would dissipate too much through the wall. And it sounds like he's single, so 12 gauge all the way. Or man up with a tommygun....automatic .45 fire that won't penetrate through multiple walls, that's golden.

Get a custom mix of rock salt and rubber pellets. Guranteed to slam them to the ground and make them bleed.

You stick a dumbass in a confined room and combine an ear splitting noise, blinding flash, and the force of a 57 chevy with piranahas on the grill slamming into his chest and lifting him into the air and you got your problem solved without the messy little things like "homocide" and "racism" involved.

Save the money on a gun. More gun owners are shot by their own guns, particularly since you have sleep apnea and have a machine running. Additionally, a gun won't protect your home when you're out, it just is something else for the thief to steal.

Use your head and get a security system installed, immediately.

hahaha.

Thanksgiving, 2005? my parents home in Scottsdale. We were testing the alarm system. Since no one has actually heard, or seen the system in action. Apparently the phone cable line in, was disconnected and the phone call from the monitoring service didn't come. About 4 hours later, we were all gathered eating thanksgiving dinner, and we see a lone female cop, snooping around in the back yard by the pool. She couldn't see us, through the tinted glass.

She mentioned how many false alarms are reported, and that they aren't made a priority at all. So don't expect the cops to come running if your alarm is triggered.

mine went off 1 time since we had it. false alarm. cops arrived in 9 minutes.

A good five alarm though isn't a bad thing, even if it doesn't call anybody. If you don't want to go the armed route, you could get some flash bangs and night vision goggles. Drop em down the stairs, look away......than come running down with the easton or the gutter pipe. You'll pretty much have your way with them since they'll all be doubled over and clutching at their eyelids. I personally would love to have 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted down time with a wood be burglar before the cops show up. I would bullwhip him into infinity.

Believe it or not a bit of that is the function of the neighborhood itself.

If you get a system that goes off with sirens and turns on lights, it's effective, far more effective than a gun sitting around in an unoccupied house.

lol a gun sitting around in an unoccupied house would just get stolen.
lol

What freaks me out the most is that this happened while he was home. They HAD to be armed. I wouldnt sleep there again until I had a security system installed!

guy that works for me had his house robbed about 15-20 yrs ago

they stole a bunch of stuff including a video camera

they ended up finding the guys and some of the stolen goods

When the stuff was returned to him, he was fiddling with the video camera and noticed they had taped themselves talking, and testing out the camera, and they were talking about a murder they committed not realizing the camera was still recording

he brought the camera back to the cops and the re-arrested the men for murder

PWNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True. Lot of dudes want say they be superman in any situation. A 9 will change all that. LOL! Most dudes would bitch out. You don't know what the other person is willing to do and is able to do. Just let them take what they are going to take. It's not worth it. Goodthing you are alright atleast. Hope they catch them.

Fuck. Did you just think that shit up? haha.

Security foks will tell u one thing:

Do everything possible to encourage thieves to hit ANOTHER house. That means lights out in front, sign that it is armed and protected, perhaps a dog, remove the big tree in front yard, window bars (if u live int he ghetto), loud alarm if door/window is opened (ear piercing loud), avoid having the h2 in the driveway when the neighborhood is poor. STuff like that.

Or move to a better neighborhood!

Save the money on a gun. More gun owners are shot by their own guns, particularly since you have sleep apnea and have a machine running. Additionally, a gun won't protect your home when you're out, it just is something else for the thief to steal.

Use your head and get a security system installed, immediately.

Im calling you out on the "more gun owners are shot with their own gun" claim.

gotta back that up with something

The outside of my apartment is covered in ADT stickers. I don't have an alarm though. Think like a thief. You are there to grab stuff and get out quick. If you see an ADT sticker you are likely to hesitate and just hit another nearby house. If you just keep a gun under your pillow, the thief is unaware of that and it doesn't factor in his decision regarding what house to hit.

Use the alarm and alarm advertisements as the preventative and the gun as the final solution.

Frigged if I can figure out how to google that particular little gem. Okay, I'm not perfect, allow me to revise what I said. Let's say in a home where there are guns, the odds are higher that someone you love (which includes you) is going to get shot by that gun before a "bad" person does.

See, here's my argument with guns (I have no general problems with guns, okay). Firstly, most people who own guns have virtually no proper training in their use. Plenty have only been to a range once or twice, if at all. Using a gun to shoot a living person when you've had basically no training, particularly when you've just been woken out of a sound sleep, is roughly on par with knowing how to protect yourself with karate just because you watched a Bruce Lee movie.

Second, many people who own guns don't think about keeping that gun properly secured. I live near Philly and I am not exaggerating when I'm telling you I hear at least two stories a year on the news (probably more) of children being shot by the family handgun.

Finally, as I said from the beginning, a gun does NOTHING to protect your home when you're not there. All you've done is now provide the thief with something else to steal that has the potential to be used to harm someone innocent.

I just think guns are over rated for home defense. And I fully expect you to have a bias, you are in Texas, after all. You people practically give guns away with Happy Meals.

I would not disagree with what you said here but still believe that should be ones prerogative.

As I said, I have no problem with gun ownership in general (with the exception of semi-automatic weapons, which have no real use or purpose for private citizens). I simply do not agree with the thought that "I have a gun, I'm safer from being robbed than if I have a good security system."

On top of everything else, you run a very real risk of being hauled to court, either to face charges or a lawsuit, if you shoot someone who breaks into your home.

I am with you - agreed 100%. Send me some nudes!!

So lets not give anyone a fighting chance at all in their own home because of any possibility it could get used against them?
That like not putting on your seatbelt because theres a chance the accident you have will burst your car into flames.

Second, many people who own guns don't think about keeping that gun properly secured. I live near Philly and I am not exaggerating when I'm telling you I hear at least two stories a year on the news (probably more) of children being shot by the family handgun.
this is a totally seperate issue from defending yourself from a home invasion or robber. But yes, guns should be properly secured when children are involved.

Finally, as I said from the beginning, a gun does NOTHING to protect your home when you're not there. All you've done is now provide the thief with something else to steal that has the potential to be used to harm someone innocent.
This makes no sense. Why have anything at all of value in your home, it just might get stolen? if guns are properly secured this is a nonissue. And if you have a concealed carry license you can just carry it with you. At least you understand a gun is an inanimate object that must be properly weilded to be of use.

I just think guns are over rated for home defense. And I fully expect you to have a bias, you are in Texas, after all. You people practically give guns away with Happy Meals.
"You people" you speak of are the majority of the nation actually. More than half of the states allow concealed carry. And in order to get a gun LEGALLY in texas you must pass a FBI background check.
If guns arent suitable for home defense i would love to know your solution.

I think there are more people accidentally shot by guns in the home than there are people who are shot while breaking into a home. I don't really care; it's just not for me.

if you own weapons, you need to use them regularly (target shooting) and clean them regularly to understand the mechanisms at work and how to handle it. having a gun and never using it is very dangerous. having a gun and knowing how to properly use it changes the equation alot. uneducated people have the ability to really hurt themselves or others with weapons. like everything, knowledge is power, even with weapons.

I love how everyone visits the same www.madeupstats.com at the same time! lol

Best advice on the thread. Make your home look like a very unattractive target.

Only thing I might add is something my parents learned from the neighbors when they moved into a really upscale neighborhood. Don't keep expensive items of any sort displayed in the walkpath most likely to be used by workmen.

the taurus is a nice piece. . .but, if you want something for home protection, and you're worried about accuracy under a stressful situation, then you want a shotgun. . .period.

a shotgun like this one. . .

I used to be into target shooting. I had a Ruger MKII target pistol. I've owned a variety of other firearms at various points in my life but if I get a new one, I will make sure that I can load it and disengage the safety while blindfolded.

my friend is a gunsmith. easily owns over 50 different rifles and 20 or so handguns. he and his wife take apart and clean each gun once a month, have been since ive known him (pre-marriage). he was the one who has taught me about handling weapons and how to use them safely. he was the one who drilled it in my head that firearms arent dangerous is you understand how they work. its very true.

I am really frightened now that they might come back. I live in a 2 story townhouse in a large complex. It's not in the ghetto. I'm in white ass suburbia. The county sheriff deputy that showed up to investigate told me that he's been working this end of the county for 15 years and he has never been called to my townhouse complex for even a petty crime or even a noise complaint. In fact there's a city cop that lives in the building next to mine and he parks his cop car in front of the place at night.

Nothing was taken from upstairs. My AC was broken so I was sleeping bare ass naked with no blankets and the bedroom door wide open. Being naked, they obviously would see that I was unarmed. There are 2 bedrooms on the second floor. One is my office and den, the other being the bedroom. I'm afraid that they may have gone upstairs and saw what I have in my bedroom and office. I have a collection of sports memorbilia that's worth about $15,000. These are small expensive items that can't be traced. A few examples of the things I have on display are a Mickey Mantle autographed baseball that's certified authentic by Upper Deck. Retail on that will run $500-$700 and that can be carried out in a pocket. Then I have a fancy display case of some baseball cards hanging on the wall. Even someone with no knowledge of baseball cards would look at the fancy case and know that they are likely worth some $$$. That case only has 18 cards in it but the combined retail value is over $6,000. There's a 1933 Babe Ruth card in outstanding condition that would fetch $3,000-$4000 at an auction.

I think I'm going to get a Brinks or ADT system if the landlord will allow it. I'm also going to get a gun too. I almost feel like I've been raped. It's such a creepy violation of my personal safety. When I go to bed I always leave the lights on downstairs. They popped out a window to enter but they had no way of knowing if someone was awake until they actually entered. That makes me think they were armed. That's just way too bold to do without a weapon. Last night I slept with my bedroom door locked and a Louisville Slugger wood bat by my bed. I play baseball so I can swing a bat pretty hard. This blows. I don't even know how long it's going to take to get my TV replaced. I also feel like I let the family down by losing the video of my sister's baby. The poor little baby almost died at 7 days old and he spent 6 weeks in the hospital. Now he's all healthy and we had some good video of him acting happy and cute and it's gone.

guns are bad mkay... buy a dog or barrow biteme's mace

Dogs aren't allowed under my lease. I saw something on TV where they were talking to people who were in prison for burglary and they asked them what the biggest deterrent is for a burglar and almost all of them said if they heard a dog they wouldn't even consider trying to break in.

I've grown up around guns all my life. My family is a very "gun friendly" family. Growing up, we had guns in the house and I knew where all of them were (even at a very young age). I shot my first handgun at around 8-9 years old under my dad's close supervision. None of us kids ever shot each other or ourselves, nor did we have anyone come in and shoot any of the family.

My sister, when she was in college (about 20 yrs old), did however shoot someone who was breaking into her apartment. Saved the life of her and her roommate. The man breaking in was threatening to rape and kill them as he was trying to get into their place.

He got his hand into a vent window and was about to unlock a large window to climb in. This was in Oklahoma, and the law at the time stated you could only shoot whatever bodypart was in the house. She shot his hand and the bullet went through his hand, through the window, and into his shoulder. She did this with a .38 cal handgun (snubnose) at a range of about 12-15 feet (across the living room).

The man fled to the indian reservation and could not be arrested. My sister and her roommate moved to Washington state.

before we were going to have kids, my wife used the guns and kids argument. my friend said, you and the kids take the guns apart and put them together before ever firing them. teach them all about the weapon. once they are old enough, you teach them to shoot. by them knowing the weapon and respecting it, they become educated and understand the uses and dangers of weapons. your family did the right thing.

I can totally relate to the way you feel violated. I also dont live in the ghetto and the intruders came back. I also live in the suburbs. I still have a hard time coming home during the day without feeling creepy. They went through my whole house, and I still to this day dont know if Im sure of everything they took. Hopefully your landlord will allow you to install a security system, mine is wireless from ADT so it wasnt a big deal or time consuming or expensive to install. I hope you get it installed soon and you can have some peace at night. The 35 dollars a month for monitoring is worth having some peace.

YOu can still buy the gun too. But the system will at least give you some peace of mind to be able to sleep at night. If they break in you know the cops are on their way. The gun can be your last resort if the alarm does not stop them before the police get there.

Good luck.

Its a fucked up world. I HATE people who steal and violently break into your home , your sanctuary, and steal. Its disgusting.

if you get the ADT system, get the phone line they install. this way, no matter what the burglars do or if the power goes out, the system is always on. it adds like $10 a month i think but this way smart burglars cant deactivate the system in anyway from the outside of the home.

I keep seeing an unwarranted assumption from the anti-gun people. They claim that having a gun makes you more likely to get killed by a burglar. It's as if they assume that the burglar wont just kill you if you are either sleeping or take a posture of passivity and just let them make off with your stuff. As if you need to draw a weapon before the violent tendency of the burglar springs to life.

I did buy a brand new gun today. I couldn't believe the prices on the quality brand names. However my sole intention for the gun is to protect my life so I got the best I could afford. I got a Taurus .38 special snub nose revolver. Revolvers never jam and are very easy to use so I can't fuck up and forget how to work my gun in the middle of a traumatic situation. I also told the gun dealer to give me a box of the most lethal ammo he had. He gave me a box of hollow points with lines indented at the tip of the bullet so that it will maximize expansion.

How much did that run you? I own a .38 with a longer barrel and I still can barely hit shit w/ it compared to my 9mm. I understand the simplicity/reliability reason though. Check my gallery for a pic of the .38 special.

it's a great assumption; i don't see why anyone would think otherwise. people commit a burglary to acquire stuffz, not to hurt people. Killing/shooting someone would cause your chances of getting caught to skyrocket, plus most people don't want to take a life or endanger their life by introducing violence.

but if your victim threatens your life then you have to fight back to stay alive, even if your initial intent was just to rob. that is why most people are better off not pulling a gun imo

I paid $400 plus $24 in tax. It came to a total of $450 with the box of ammo. I didn't have money for anything with a longer barrel. This gun is really just for shooting a person at a distance of 20-25 feet at most. I DEFINITELY feel more secure with it so I think it was worth the price simply in relieving some anxiety and fear.

Save the money on a gun. More gun owners are shot by their own guns, particularly since you have sleep apnea and have a machine running. Additionally, a gun won't protect your home when you're out, it just is something else for the thief to steal.

Use your head and get a security system installed, immediately.

But a security system is passive. A gun is active, and therefore, more macho.

Yeah, I know ... pretty much in the same category as going out and buying a big SUV when the most off roading that will ever get done is running onto the soft shoulder, buying a big ass truck when the most hauling it will ever see is the weekly groceries, a sports car that can go 200 without breathing heavy when the damn speed limit in this country isn't over 65 anywhere, or that ultra hot girlfriend who is an insufferable bitch who never puts out.

Fuck being macho, I just want to remain alive for the next 4 or 5 decades. I'm not trying to pretend that I'm Dirty Harry.

I'm still waiting on word from the manager as to whether they will allow the alarm system. It looks like the actual installation of the alarm is pretty inexpensive but they make their money off of the monthly service fee. I'm about to eliminate a $50 monthly expense for renting a storage room. I was going to take that extra $50 a month to put in a savings account but it looks like I might end up spending it on security.

At least my sleep apnea problem has improved greatly this past week after I increased the pressure on my CPAP machine.

You must really be having a bad week. Or you are just a full on marxist.

I dont know. Maybe its because Im a woman or something, but I'd rather have my internet and cable shut off before I wouldnt pay my security bill. Thats how much I think its worth.

I've also got a shotgun in my closet and a baseball bat next to my bed. lol. But I dont have any delusions thinking that I would probably try and jump out the window or hide if someone broke in and wasnt deterred by the alarm. In a fight or flight situation I always fly! lol cant help my instinct I guess :p

I pay my security bill at my dumbell rack when I feed the pythons.

we were told by adt to stay in our walk in closet, door shut, phone in hand, with/without gun. we have a key pad in our closet. the way our house is set, they would have to come up 3 flights to get to the bedroom, through that door, then through the closet door. if they make it to the closet door, shoot through the door. thats our plan. i hope i never have to do that but we are ready. the funny part, she never supported the whole thing till she saw the movie the strangers.

I'm a bit mystified about the concept of hiding in a closet. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense, because it does to some extent. But don't most security systems set off an unbearably loud alarm sound that you can hear throughout the entire neighborhood? What burgular would run the risk of taking extra time to "rummage" when the whole neighborhood can hear that *something* is amiss?

As for moving to a better neighborhood, criminals commute to work too. I mean, I know that living in the hood the chances of having people mess with you goes up exponentially. But living in a nice neighborhood will often times make one a target as well. I mean, aren't the chances better of actually recovering stuff of value in a million dollar home than they are breaking into a studio in the ghetto?

I do believe that making your house SEEM like a place that would be more trouble to rob seems to be the best advice. Truth is, if a criminal wants to break into your home to steal your stuff or steal your car whathaveyou, THEY WILL. But increasing the obvious degree of difficulty will make your home/car a statistically a less desirable target.

Sorry that happened to you. It really sucks that good people are forced to live in fear.

funny you say because i said the exact same thing to the technician when he was putting the key pad in the closet and he said people do break in homes to commit violent acts. we would need to hold off the attacker long enough for the police response. scary shit.

Those are the type of breakins that scare the SHIT out of me. Fuck if they want to take everything, I got insurance, but :shudder: if they wanted anything else.

:worried:

I dunno... that just doesn't seem right. I mean, if a man was breaking in to rape me, not even talking to steal stuff why would he stay in my home once that gawd-awfull noise went off so that the entire freaking neighborhood could know that something was amiss at my house?

My next question is if you are in the closet clutching your shotgun, heart is pounding, adrenaline pumping, that gawd-awfull siren going off and you've got your finger on the trigger ready to blow a hole through whomever is on the other side of the door how would you know not to shoot a police officer or anyone else that was there to help you?

In general, you ladies are much more of a target of serial rapists. That would be scary as hell. The best security is a dog. Even burglars will admit that. Unfortunately my lease does not allow for a dog or any other animal for that matter. I'll be lucky if they let me install an alarm system :(

seriously, some of your posts are just to argue and this is one of them. im not even answering these "points" you think youve arrived at. they are plain ridiculous.

i think everyone should be armed regardless these days.
sort of makes me feel lucky that i wake up at the drop of a hat... all the way on the other side of the house ;)

im glad all they got away with were material things tho. some of the violent shit you hear about.. as rare as they may be, i dont wanna end up being one of those stories. all it takes is someone gettin the jump on you one time.

and don't buy a house int he ghetto! (or next to one)
r

LOL good point. I live in a urban/suburban area. My neighborhood is a nice, brand new neighborhood. There can be nice neighborhoods next to shitholes. There is section 8 housing less than a 10 minute drive away. So yeah. lol.

No I wasn't "just arguing" it is my nature to question things that don't make sense to me. I just think outside the box which has always gotten me in a lot of trouble with the adult world.

I wasn't saying anything negative about your posts or saying that anyone who follows this advice is bad/wrong. I just don't understand why an alarm company would tell people such things. My questions were legitimate and do NOT place any blame on the victim whatsoever. No one ASKS to get robbed/violated. And I think it very sad that we live in times where we have to fret about such things which is often greater the nicer the neighborhood one lives in. CRIMINALS COMMUTE TO WORK TOO.

Our alarm went off accidentally in the middle of the night last night. The noise is defeaning. I have a hard time understanding why any criminal - whether they were there to rob or rape would stay around long enough to finish the dead when my entire neighborhood could hear the noise, especially in the dead of the night.

Nothing more/nothing less.

i completely understand. its a womans nature to be inquisitive. my wife is a huge pain in the balls like that. you have all valid points and provide another perspective. i think my reasoning has been explained well. i believe the rationale is sound.

Get one of these bitches for the next time you get robbed, they aint gonna be gettin up quickly after a shot from one of these!

Not that there isn't something cool about holding a howitzer in your hand, but jesus what a useless round to have in a gunfight. That's ridiculous muzzle rise. Fact is that two average people get in close quarters gunfight, one with a nine and the other with that battleship cannon......the nine probably wins unless the standoff was from 10 yds or less. Outside that you need some serious range time with that gun to be even remotely accurate. The dude in the video is a pimp for sure, but notice he's gloved up and he's "prepared". You reach for that thing groggy in the middle of the night and the first round that goes off is taking your wrist, you'll probably put the round right into the ceiling. For home defense a small caliber shotty still pwns all. You can just point that thing around a corner and start sweepin.

Redsamurai, that's exactly why I went with the .38 snub nose. It's the easiest gun in the world to shoot that still has some knock down power.

I've read that the .40 is the best overall handgun. I've fired that and a .45, but not a nine. I'm not really good at shooting anyways, don't do it much....so I can't really give much personal experience. I know guys that do and they all say if you're not a gun hound, meaning you're not at the range regularly........you want a shotty for home defense.

super unweildly...pulling out a big ass shotgun from under a bed or something?
not quick like a 38 under your bed, and more mobile if you gotta shuffle around.

A .40 caliber is a semi-auto round. I specifically wanted a revolver because they don't jam and they are so simple to use. A .40 caliber is certainly a good round but wasn't what I was looking for.
