My house got robbed last night while I was home

I used to be into target shooting. I had a Ruger MKII target pistol. I've owned a variety of other firearms at various points in my life but if I get a new one, I will make sure that I can load it and disengage the safety while blindfolded.

my friend is a gunsmith. easily owns over 50 different rifles and 20 or so handguns. he and his wife take apart and clean each gun once a month, have been since ive known him (pre-marriage). he was the one who has taught me about handling weapons and how to use them safely. he was the one who drilled it in my head that firearms arent dangerous is you understand how they work. its very true.

I am really frightened now that they might come back. I live in a 2 story townhouse in a large complex. It's not in the ghetto. I'm in white ass suburbia. The county sheriff deputy that showed up to investigate told me that he's been working this end of the county for 15 years and he has never been called to my townhouse complex for even a petty crime or even a noise complaint. In fact there's a city cop that lives in the building next to mine and he parks his cop car in front of the place at night.

Nothing was taken from upstairs. My AC was broken so I was sleeping bare ass naked with no blankets and the bedroom door wide open. Being naked, they obviously would see that I was unarmed. There are 2 bedrooms on the second floor. One is my office and den, the other being the bedroom. I'm afraid that they may have gone upstairs and saw what I have in my bedroom and office. I have a collection of sports memorbilia that's worth about $15,000. These are small expensive items that can't be traced. A few examples of the things I have on display are a Mickey Mantle autographed baseball that's certified authentic by Upper Deck. Retail on that will run $500-$700 and that can be carried out in a pocket. Then I have a fancy display case of some baseball cards hanging on the wall. Even someone with no knowledge of baseball cards would look at the fancy case and know that they are likely worth some $$$. That case only has 18 cards in it but the combined retail value is over $6,000. There's a 1933 Babe Ruth card in outstanding condition that would fetch $3,000-$4000 at an auction.

I think I'm going to get a Brinks or ADT system if the landlord will allow it. I'm also going to get a gun too. I almost feel like I've been raped. It's such a creepy violation of my personal safety. When I go to bed I always leave the lights on downstairs. They popped out a window to enter but they had no way of knowing if someone was awake until they actually entered. That makes me think they were armed. That's just way too bold to do without a weapon. Last night I slept with my bedroom door locked and a Louisville Slugger wood bat by my bed. I play baseball so I can swing a bat pretty hard. This blows. I don't even know how long it's going to take to get my TV replaced. I also feel like I let the family down by losing the video of my sister's baby. The poor little baby almost died at 7 days old and he spent 6 weeks in the hospital. Now he's all healthy and we had some good video of him acting happy and cute and it's gone.

guns are bad mkay... buy a dog or barrow biteme's mace

Dogs aren't allowed under my lease. I saw something on TV where they were talking to people who were in prison for burglary and they asked them what the biggest deterrent is for a burglar and almost all of them said if they heard a dog they wouldn't even consider trying to break in.

I think there are more people accidentally shot by guns in the home than there are people who are shot while breaking into a home. I don't really care; it's just not for me.

I've grown up around guns all my life. My family is a very "gun friendly" family. Growing up, we had guns in the house and I knew where all of them were (even at a very young age). I shot my first handgun at around 8-9 years old under my dad's close supervision. None of us kids ever shot each other or ourselves, nor did we have anyone come in and shoot any of the family.

My sister, when she was in college (about 20 yrs old), did however shoot someone who was breaking into her apartment. Saved the life of her and her roommate. The man breaking in was threatening to rape and kill them as he was trying to get into their place.

He got his hand into a vent window and was about to unlock a large window to climb in. This was in Oklahoma, and the law at the time stated you could only shoot whatever bodypart was in the house. She shot his hand and the bullet went through his hand, through the window, and into his shoulder. She did this with a .38 cal handgun (snubnose) at a range of about 12-15 feet (across the living room).

The man fled to the indian reservation and could not be arrested. My sister and her roommate moved to Washington state.

before we were going to have kids, my wife used the guns and kids argument. my friend said, you and the kids take the guns apart and put them together before ever firing them. teach them all about the weapon. once they are old enough, you teach them to shoot. by them knowing the weapon and respecting it, they become educated and understand the uses and dangers of weapons. your family did the right thing.
