It matters greatly in basketball, upper body strength. I trained a player who held the NCAA tourney 3 point record about 5 years ago. The NBA team (of which his Dad played) sent him home because of he couldn't hold off on the inside. He use to come in and train and lay on the bench and sleep...figures.

most of the contact in hoops is body on body contact, not full on shoving, and the power is derived from the legs and core.

please explain to me how shoving power, which is what bench press essentially is, will help one get significantly more rebounds
