It matters greatly in basketball, upper body strength. I trained a player who held the NCAA tourney 3 point record about 5 years ago. The NBA team (of which his Dad played) sent him home because of he couldn't hold off on the inside. He use to come in and train and lay on the bench and sleep...figures.

please explain to me how shoving power, which is what bench press essentially is, will help one get significantly more rebounds

that's like saying explain to me how having a huge nose will help you in basketball... it isn't gonna help you, but it isn't gonna hurt you much either.

rebounding...physically, timing issues aside... comes down to how high you can jump and how well you can box out. boxing out uses ass, leg, and core strength; and i'm guessing jumping is pretty much legs and calves

jumping is the least needed to if you have boxed out properly. Boxing out is a matter of positioning/angles and holding your own

well, regardless of what you think, this is a major concern for nba teams considering him
read the papers or espn, this is a black mark against him and could possibly drop him in the draft pick

if they care how much he bps and think itl mak ehim better then they can make the trainer work bp with him. its not a big fucking deal, if hes possible number one nba draft pick hes that for a reason, cause hes good, even without pb strength.

but the thinking is that you need more skills in the nba to ball at that level
maybe he succeded against smaller college players, but can he against big ass menz? esp being that weak? that is the concern
and just being the number one pick doesn't gurantee a stellar nba career
