City of Chicago's gun ban....

what is crazy is that none of our gun experts on here appear to know anything about this...

also that I can search the internet and it is hard to find any exact information on it - they probably don't want you to inquire into what you CAN own there....

There was rather a stink when the suburb of Willow Grove enacted a handgun ban; the law in Kennesaw GA -- which requires every head of household* to own a functioning firearm and some token amount of ammo -- dates back to that. Kennesaw wanted to make a political statement but discovered that their (already very low) crime rate dropped to zero.

A few states passed preemption laws after Willow Grove, saying cities were not allowed to confuse the issue any further by passing ordinances more strict than the state's law. Illinois is a mess, always has been, probably always will be.

(*with an exception granted to religious pacifists)

"In Chicago it is unlawful to keep any firearm unless it has been registered with the Chicago Police at Daley Center. All firearms brought into the city must be registered. The registration certificate (valid for 1 year) must be carried simultaneously with the firearm, and exhibited upon demand of any police officer. Handguns may not be registered after 1982. So-called assault firearms may not be registered."

yeah, you're fucked....maybe.

ok, you have to register any firearm that you bring into chicago, something i am vehemently against for numerous reasons; eventual confiscation, government telling how and where you must store it (can be elsewhere besides your home), etc.

however, not the part about 'assualt weapons' being banned. unless your city has an ordinance defining what an 'assault weapon' is, they cant enforce it, since the government's definition of an 'assault weapon' is no longer on the books.

let me see.

You really should take a history class before you try and bring up "the well regulated militia" aspect.

this is a highly debated aspect of the 2nd amendment. there are many discrepancies as to exactly what that is. private citizens to rise up against a tyrannical gov't, the national guard... yada yada. i have a degree in political science and have taken classes with conservative as well as liberal professors. while i feel i have a well rounded view of the constitution i also find that each and every "expert" usually believes it to mean something different. hence each is taken with a grain of salt. therefore rather than give you one opinion as to what it means, i left that statement open as i don't care to debate my interpretation of it. personally i don't care, i just mentioned it as a "qualifying factor".

Poink - Thanks for the info man...

"Any weapon that the superintendent of police defines by regulation as an assault
weapon because the design or operation of such weapon is inappropriate for lawful use."

This means it is fuct....

So I guess an 18" barrel 12 guage or a rifle is about all there is....

What about women- how many of them are going to use a shotgun or a rifle for self defense... I think the handgun ban is to their disadvantage.

Why dont we just ask the people who WROTE the constitution what they meant???

Thomas Jefferson: "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." (T. Jefferson papers,
334, C.J. Boyd, Ed. 1950)

DID YOU READ THAT SHEEPLE..... EVER EVER EVER EVER.. That means EVER you stupid fucking liberals.

"The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves in all cases to which they think themselves competent (as in electing their functionaries executive and legislative, and deciding by a jury of themselves in all judiciary cases in which any fact is involved), or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press."
--Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824

John Adams: "Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self
defense." (A defense of the Constitution of the US)

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks."

--Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1785.

Whereas civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as military forces, which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms.

- Tench Coxe

To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.

- Richard Henry Lee

The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.

- Alexander Hamilton

And here is an example of EXACTLY what we would have if arms were banned

Whenever people . . . entrust the defense of their country to a regular, standing army, composed of mercenaries, the power of that country will remain under the direction of the most wealthy citizens.

-- "A Framer," in the Independent Gazetteer, 1791

I think his speake VOLUMES to EXACTLY what they "meant" when they wrote the constitution.. so I think most of you anti gun idiots can STFU.

and here is one of my favorites

George Mason: "To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them." (3 Elliot,
Debates at 380)

oh and for you "militia only" idiots

George Mason: "I ask you sir, who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people." (Elliott,
Debates, 425-426)

And here are some of our FAVORITW Anti-Gun advocates

Adolf Hitler: "This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun
registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead."
(Chancelor's Speech, 1935)

Charles Shumer: (US Congress, has sworn an oath to defend the US Constitution) "All we ask for
is registration, just like we do for cars." (Press conference, 1993, exact date being sought)

Adof Hitler: "The most foolish mistake we could make would be to allow the subject peoples to
possess arms. So let's not have any talk about native militias." (Hitler's Secret Conversations,
1941-44, Farrar, Strauss and Young, 1953)

Mao Tse Tung: "All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The communist party must
command all the guns, that way, no guns can ever be used to command the party." (Problems of
War and Strategy, Nov 6 1938, published in "Selected Works of Mao Zedong," 1965)

Diane Feinstein: "US Senator, If I could have banned them all- 'Mr. and Mrs. America turn in
your guns' -I would have!" (Statement on TV program 69 Minutes, Feb 5 1995)

Mahatma Gandhi: "Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the
act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest." ("Gandhi, an Autobiography," M.K. Gandhi,
446)

Sigmund Freud: "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity."
("General Introduction to Psychoanalysis," S. Freud)

Bill Clinton: (US President, has sworn an oath to defend the US Constitution, (not to violate it,
criticize it, and belittle it)) "When we got organized as a country, [and] wrote a fairly radical
Constitution, with a radical Bill of Rights, giving radical amounts of freedom to Americans, it was
assumed that Americans who had that freedom would use it responsibly...When personal freedom is
being abused, you have to move to limit it." (April 19 1994, on MTV)

You must spread some Karma around before giving it to Milo Hobgoblin again.
