cardio right after weights? benefit or burning muscle

viciousness

New member
Recently i've have some bro's at the gym say stuff to me about lifting for 45min to an hour and a half then hitting cardio for 20-30 min. is that just gonna burn some of the muscle off from being so glycogen depleted and wiped out? Or would it be better if i came back in at night like 5-6 hours later and did a 20-40 minute cardio session?

Others would know more about this, but it's better to seperate the cardio and the lifting. After you're lifting it's better to get some protien and rest. If cardio can be done on a different day even better.

doign cardio in the morning, and then lifiting in the afternoon after work is a good way to go. I have done cardio a couple times right after lifting weights, but only because I couldn't get it in elsewhere. Like dj said, keep em separated if possible. You'll want food in between them.

If your doing cadio do interval cadio you will burn awesome amount of bodyfat off and will not burn off muscle. Everytime i want to lean out that's the way to go.

that's the way I train if I am doing cardio.

But what makes you think that it won't burn muscle? If there is no fat to burn and not enough calories muscle is going to be used for energy no matter what kind of cardio you do.

that's the whole idea of interval training. I helps to keep the body from minimizing the body from going into a cortizal releasing phase. However if you do not have enough fuel in the body it will become canabilistic. But people who have been training seriously already do that so it's a gimmy.

The principle behind doing cardio after lifting weights is that a good amount of your glycogen stores are already depleted, thus you will switch from using glycogen for energy to fat for energy, faster.

Dabuffguy got it right. You need food to build muscle. Doing cardio before breakfast also helps me eat a LOT more throughout the day, with less forcefeeding.
Not to mention if you bust your ass lifting, you should get to reward yourself with a good meal, not punish yourself by riding a bike or jogging on a treadmill. (I hate cardio lol)

There are a couple studies that suggest that cardio immediately after weights burns more fat. The reason is your body uses up a lot of your glycogen stores while lifting weights. Just don't overdo it. While 30 minutes probably won't affect muscle growth, if you do 2 hours of cardio after a 90 minute lifting session, chances are you'll lose muscle.
