A Month of Masochism: 20-rep breathing squats

Guinness5.0

Wow. This month is gonna be death - I'm planning on four weeks for this. I'd thought I'd work up to 365x20 by friday of week four. We'll see. Conditioning will have to come up if today's workout is indicative of the future.

Squat warmups/CNS primer
Sets of five with the bar, 135, 185, 225, 275, 315
Doubles w/ 365 and 405, single with 455

-This may have been a bit much. I'm just gonna do a heavy walkout next time to see if that helps. I'm still carrying some fatigue in my posterior chain, which is a bit of a surprise seeing as I deloaded last week in my standard manner. Lately my sleep has been inadequate, so hopefully getting back to a solid 8 hours a night will get this fatigue fully dissipated.

20-Rep Set: 315
-Very tough, but there's definitely room - hard to describe. The set was like this: ten steady reps, a triple, three big long breaths, another triple, several big breaths (I was fucking gasping here - no endurance), then two doubles seperated by more big breaths. No drama - the difficulty was all metabolic in my estimation. I was shaky throughout my workout after this.

Bench
warmups, 275x10x2

-These were kinda fun. It's really strange to go from singles to tens. They got tough at around rep seven, but seven through ten felt pretty much the same - with triples, if rep two is tough, rep three don't go up :p

Pendlay Rows
135x10, 225x10, x9

-I thought I was being lazy pegging 'em at 225, but this was brutal. I'll try to get 'em next time.

I'm not 100% on what I'm gonna run through the rest of the week. I'm set on another 20-repper on Friday, and I plan to bench, standing OHP, and inc. DB press M,W,F respectively. I'm not sure if I'm gonna do any lower body stuff on wednesdays. We'll see. Input welcome. Oh BTW (for those who were reading my last journal), elbow pain is nonexistent.

Nice - it kills me you're doing 20 reps with my 3 x 3RM :p

I remember a 20 rep squat session I tried way back when and it wasn't even a full squat lol. Still a killer though and a real challenge keep the lower back tight as I got towards the end.

I have 'Super Squats' from Strossen but haven't really sat down and read it - something about a gallon of milk, 20 rep squats and add weight every workout (I think it's 3 x week)

Yeah this is certainly bastardized. I think 3x week would destroy me.

I'm hoping to recomp/cut a bit. Forgot to mention that. In an effort to keep every ounce of strength I gained from my drug cycle, I ate like a maniac after it (did the gallon of whole milk/day thing on top of 3 BIG meals and plenty of junk food). Gut shot back up to 41" from 38.5". I'm thinking that something this drastic, which is so different from what I've been doing, will allow for recomping (kinda like what HST did for me).

If reps >5 constitutes high volume, then man, I don't know what this is.

Good work. Post of video :p

Truth is, people only want to see the first rep where you dominate, the 5th rep when you start to think it's a bad idea, the 10th rep when you loose your sanity, and the last 3 because it's fun to watch people suffer. :artist:

I might. I'd have to buy a big SD card and I'm squirreling every spare cent I have into my home gym fund. But it'd be good inspiration to know that I'm accountable to you all when the burn in my thighs is screaming at me to quit by rep 12 :D

IMO, reps 13-17 are the worst by far.

17+ you are just happy that it's almost over. And by then, the pain has numbed out and it's just adrenadline taking over.

I'm sure you've seen Marunde's 405 x 20. Man that was painful to watch, in a good way ;)

Actually, you won't be too far off that at the end.

It was 407 X20. I've seen it a time or two :D It was pretty much the inspiration for this madness.

And BTW - at this point I'm thinking 365 is a bit ambitious. But who knows - I'm certainly not ruling it out.

I watched the Marunde video again as soon as I saw this title. Are you going to preceed your squats with 10x hand-clap pull-ups too? ;)

Good luck bro, this is going to be fun (for us watching :p)!
