I'm sorry but if you are buying a house for the three of you, then I don't see any reason for a promise ring. It's kind of an elementary school thing.

Does she know that you plan on marrying her? Are you serious about it? Have you asked her to marry you or are you waiting for the ring?

A "promise" ring is a pretty silly premise. I promise that in the future I'll promise to marry you? Oh well, if you love her (and are serious about the "promise") make her happy and get her one. $300 should be fine, make sure you haggle the shit out of the jewlery nazis.
