What happened to these guys?

Why do the pro bodybuilders of 10-15 years ago look so much better than the bodybuilders of today?

Saw pictures of this years Mr. O competition and these guys do NOT look as great as what Flex Wheeler and Kevin Levrone looked back years ago. These bodybuilders lacked symetry, definition, striations. They seem bloated and soft.

What's going on? Is it all that UG crap gear? What? They can't find pharm grade gear anymore? LOL!!!!

Distended guts from the high amounts of gh

Because today's bodybuilding is more about shear size than aesthetics. They created Men's physique for the guys that want to look good.

These guys looked smaller to me. No clue what you're talking about.

Shit! Even Jay Cutler didn't look as great as he did back a few years ago.

insulin abuse, judging is different than it was.. what you view as looking better isn't what wins Mr O today. no idea who is right or wrong but if you showed a pic of todays Mr. O to 100 females maybe 2 or 3 would say "wow he is hot".. vs. show a pic of 30 years ago and probably 85% would say they liked.

everyone has different goals.. personally I do this for my own reasons and if someone has a problem with it they can STFU cause I don't care. just like jay cutler has his goals and the skinny marathon runner/swimmer has his goals. it is not me to judge who is right or wrong as long as you work your ass off and respect fitness you are okay in my book

After you go back 10-15, go back another 10-15. Those guys trained for aesthetics rather than just size. You'll never see another Zane, Schwarzenegger or Mentzer.

Not sure what you're talking about, look at their legs alone. This guys now are 3-4 inches shorter and 20-30 pounds heavier than the guys years ago.

Phil Heath - 5'9 250
Jay Cutler - 5'8 260
Ronnie Coleman - 5'11 295

Arnold - 6'2 235
Reeves - 6-1 215

Or do you mean not that far back?

Just a huge disappointment these dudes nowadays. Soft, bloated, lack of striations. Goddamnit! Even Jay Cutler looks like crap! He looked sooooo much better many years ago.

I say its all this crap garbage UG shit we are all forced to use because pharm grade is near impossible to get.

Insulin abuse?! Come on, bro. And there wasn't insulin abuse back 10-20 years ago? Come on.

10 years ago would have been 2003. I'm talking about the 70's..

the UG theory makes no sense.. cause the guys today are so much bigger so if we went by that theory UG would be blowing away pharma grade.. its not about the gear, yes they use more gear today.. its about the synthol, GH, and insulin which is used today by all the pro's.. in the 70's it wasn't used by pro's at all. I have tried only insulin briefly a couple times and have no desire to use it frequently, nor can I afford GH or am willing to mess around with synthol... if bodybuilding was my only full time job and I made a full fledged living off of it then I would probably be forced to use all 3 though assuming I wanted to make it anywhere

There is a lot of speculation about what causes their guts to look the way they do, high hgh dose, insulin, peptides. I think it is a combo of a lot of things, but especially the insulin. Every time I use insulin, I bloat a lot, especially in the stomach area. Look like I am pregnant. So do that to a guy that is 250 pounds at 4% body fat, I think you'd look that way.

Yes, the guys today are using synthol, insulin, and GH in high amounts which greatly contribute to the bloated guts and so forth. However, I wouldn't say that these guys look like crap compared to the guys from 10-15 years ago. Guys have gotten bigger obviously, which requires more drugs, GH, and insulin but the Olympia is starting to revert back to looking at aesthetics as the primary look over size. The biggest guy no longer wins, or else Kai greene and big Ramy would have stole the show. The fact of the matter is that Phil Heath had the best aesthetics on that stage, and why he won the Olympia yet again. I thought he looked great, had great striations, full rounded muscle bellies, and still a relatively small waist given his size. Another thing you have to understand is that it is physically impossible to be 250lbs at 4% bodyfat and 5,9" with a 28" waist. As your body grows, everything grows. Not everyone likes the huge massive look of today's bodybuilders, but I still appreciate it even though I will always be partial to the great bodybuilders of the 70s like Arnold, Lou, and Franco that inspired me as a kid. The sport is just evolving with the times. Just wait and see what walks out on that stage in another 10-15 years

I agree but I personally love the look of the modern day bodybuilder. But could someone please help my boy Dennis Wolf out n jab his calves with synthol, cause he obviously can't reach.

The gut comes from insulin. Straight up.

Cutler goes on stage with no bloat. His BF is too low on stage to look bloated.

The "bloat" you refer to is that gut which is undeniable.

Stevesmi, I love the look 30 years ago. Those dudes pulled chicks. Any modern day pro bodybuilder that gets chicks is getting the same kind of freak that they are themselves.

I like the way dorian and levrone think though. Absolutely massive when competing but now they are retired they dont try hang with the pros any more and are just normal guys. Unfortunately to be competitive in bodybuilding now you have to be a freak. I hope a lot more retired pros go the way of dorian and levrone and not like ronnie.

While I prefer the look of the 70s guys I like seeing just how big the pros nowadays can get..

Explain to me what happened to Jay Cutler? Looked great a few years ago. Now? Looks like crap! I don't see a bigger gut. I just see crap all over!

As for Dorian, Kevin, Nassar...these guys were HUUUUGE yet still looked riiiiipped!

Todays pro bodybuilder in a Mr. O comp? *sigh smh* retarded. Really

I showed a couple chicks pics of bodybuilders today.. this is a nice experiment you can try yourself to see what looks good to the female eye.

I showed them a pic of the current Mr O Heath vs. Arnold from the mid 70's..

Heath was met by "wtf? I didn't even know those muscles existed and that is nasty!" Arnold was met by "yeah he is still too big but he looks way better, the other guy looks like he isn't even human, its looks like he has a bunch of tumors on his body"

In a word -- slin.

But even the guys from the late 90's don;t look that great today. Meanwhile, a lot guys from the 60's and 70's still look great. Actually, that might be because back then, they wanted to be bodybuilders. Today, you have naturally big guys born into a drug culture.

His past 2 Olympia showings he was dealing with injuries. This year he tore his other bicep, and by tore I mean actually tore not a botched synthol injection that fucked up his bicep in 2011. His tear this year caused his rear lat spread to be weak because he couldn't spread his lats all the way.

If you look at him from 2001-2006 and 2009-2010 he looked good. He didn't look that bad in 2011 either and was in pretty decent condition.

If you look at the new Olympia 212 lb class.....those guys are where its at. In photos they appear to be 250 sometimes. But they have way more aesthetics and a much more appealing look.

I like the 90's guys, I basically grew up with that BB'ing era. I like some of the new guys too. I appreciate the massive guys. Some guys though.....eck....Marcus Ruhl for example, just big and blocky and boxy. Never had a chance to win the O. The O is all political anyways. Joe Weider decides who has the best image for the face of the sport at the time and as long as they look reasonably good they win.
I loved it a few years back when Dexter Jackson won.

A lot of the guys in the 212 class are carrying more muscle than guys in the open class. That class is pretty much all guys under 5'6". Flex Lewis is a fucking monster that's bigger than most guys in the open class, but he is 5'4" which is why he weighed in at like 204 at the weigh ins. I love that class too. Them guys look phenomenal there and have some sick lines. Peeled to the bone too

Jay is still trying to hang with the big boys.. injuries, a divorce, major change in sponsor and coming back after taking a year out. Remember jay in 09. We know what he can look like but he will never look like that again.

I just hope he has the sense to drop down to a reasonable size when he stops competing

I'm not sure Joe has a say in it. If he did, there would have been more profitable choices than Ron Coleman. And in the first Master's Olympia, he promoted the shit out of Lou Ferrigno and Robbie came along and took it -- because he looked better. (And Robbie is not exactly Mister congeniality).

I do think Dexter was the most aesthetic Mr O in recent times

Jay Culter is over 40.. usually these guys peak in their mid to late 30's. now that's not saying he can't pull a comeback like Arnold did and win it again (keep in mind he was 33 when he won it his last time), but the body can only take so much wear and tear before your peers pass you by.

also I think I saw someone say Arnold was 6 3".. he is listed as 6 2, and if you do some googling guys that have stood next to him peg him really between 6 feet even and 6 1. it would be very difficult to be 6 3 and a successful BB

I remember seeing somewhere that he said he will never be close to 300lbs again. He wants to get down to around 230-240 range and stay there.

Is this after he retires. I think he can easily carry off 240lbs. He has a massively wide frame.. he is a great ambassador for the sport would hate to see him ruin this by trying to stay 280-300lbs

You are comparing a marathon runner to a IFBB pro? They're not even in the same ballpark. One is focused on endurance and health while the other is focused on pure chemically altered looks. Bodybuilding is not a sport, like events endurance athletes compete in.

you missed the point of my post. atleast I think you did?

the point is if someone wants to look like a bodybuilder and work their ass off then I give them props. . and if someone wants to look like an endurance athlete and work their ass off I also give them props.. hell if you want to be a pot bellied powerlifter who can bench 500 but has a gut that is your business too.. there isn't a right or wrong way in fitness.

does that make more sense for you now?

maybe you are saying a bodybuilder is just chemically enhanced and doesn't have to work for it? if so you are dead wrong. and I was an endurance athlete myself at one time BEF (before Elite fitness).. if you think they aren't on GH, Test, EPO, GW, and other 'chemicals' you are sadly mis-informed. atleast the ones that are winning the events sure as hell are, same with those crossfit guys.. Lance Armstrong was busted for using PED's remember? now if you want to go out there and do a half marathon in 2 hours of a 5K in 25 minutes then no you don't have to be enhanced.

as a former endurance athlete I pity anyone who thinks endurance athletes are 'healthy' .. do you realize how fucked up my feet, ankles, knees, shins, hips are from doing that? these are PERMANENT injuries that I will have to deal with the rest of my life. the human body did not evolve to run on hard surfaces!!

bodybuilding and weight training is far healthier unless you go out there with a big ego and are a douche when you lift and use bad form. I have to constantly argue with idiot parents in my school who are concerned that weightlifting stunts growth or any of that other nonsense. weightlifting is the safest 'sport' out there. 0 injuries at my school from weight training. do you know how many injuries from soccer, football, volleyball, cross country, track?

Holy fuck....weight lifting stunts growth in kids.....why cant these people just kill themselves? I am so tired of this shit. You should see the faces on these people at my gym when my 12 year old reps 675 on the sled. That's loaded down with 45's....not some move the pin pulley assisted shit.
You would have to actually fracture a growth plate while lifting to fuck up the kid. What does heavy lifting do? It causes the release of more GH for Christ sake. How does that stunt growth? Tell that to my 5'10" 200 lb 12 year old with the 14.5" bi's and 26" quads.
That doesn't mean you don't have to have them do lots of rotator prehab and teach them to lift intelligently and to not go too heavy with things involving shoulders when they are younger. Because you certainly can fuck up their connective tissue/joints if you are a shit bag parent/trainer. Well hey BTC....really? 675 for legs? Yeah....that's a two rep max and its maybe once a month because he gets super motivated.....AND....its LEGS....not shoulders.

........AND......to elaborate on steve's post its not the weights that stunt the growth of their kids....its the shitty genetics YOU passed along to YOUR kids people!!! Or the SHIT food you feed them. Or the shit bags that teach their kids not to eat meat!! Not the weights.

My thoughts exactly. Don't get me wrong, my world doesn't revolve around chicks by any means, but I always looked at bodybuilding as a sport where the endgame was supposed to be an aesthetically pleasing person, not a freak.

I gotta deal with parents all the time bro.. I coach and judge HS weightlifting. I try and tell them how much safer weightlifting is than anything else but they don't listen.. there was a teacher at the school whose kid was 6 years old who paralyzed himself playing soccer!! true story. he ran into another kid and it was a fluke thing.

Right....these are the same parents who "reward" their kids with a trip to Mcdonalds then take them home and make them boxed macaroni and cheese and feed them hot pockets and hot dogs.

Nor are people evolved to run with rubber soles on their feet. Its hilarious really how our culture promotes running like humans are creatures that are evolutionarily meant to run. If we were meant to run we would be on all fours; talk to anyone in anthropology and they will tell you that the evolution to upright walking was a trade off - we gained the ability to carry things and lost the ability for fast, efficient movement. My old man used to be a runner and he had 2 hip replacements and a knee replacement.......BY THE TIME HE WAS 45! He always blames his college football days and I always just laugh and shake my head.
