My house got robbed last night while I was home

Save the money on a gun. More gun owners are shot by their own guns, particularly since you have sleep apnea and have a machine running. Additionally, a gun won't protect your home when you're out, it just is something else for the thief to steal.

Use your head and get a security system installed, immediately.

But a security system is passive. A gun is active, and therefore, more macho.

I paid $400 plus $24 in tax. It came to a total of $450 with the box of ammo. I didn't have money for anything with a longer barrel. This gun is really just for shooting a person at a distance of 20-25 feet at most. I DEFINITELY feel more secure with it so I think it was worth the price simply in relieving some anxiety and fear.

get the security system too.

Yeah, I know ... pretty much in the same category as going out and buying a big SUV when the most off roading that will ever get done is running onto the soft shoulder, buying a big ass truck when the most hauling it will ever see is the weekly groceries, a sports car that can go 200 without breathing heavy when the damn speed limit in this country isn't over 65 anywhere, or that ultra hot girlfriend who is an insufferable bitch who never puts out.

Fuck being macho, I just want to remain alive for the next 4 or 5 decades. I'm not trying to pretend that I'm Dirty Harry.

I'm still waiting on word from the manager as to whether they will allow the alarm system. It looks like the actual installation of the alarm is pretty inexpensive but they make their money off of the monthly service fee. I'm about to eliminate a $50 monthly expense for renting a storage room. I was going to take that extra $50 a month to put in a savings account but it looks like I might end up spending it on security.

At least my sleep apnea problem has improved greatly this past week after I increased the pressure on my CPAP machine.

You must really be having a bad week. Or you are just a full on marxist.

I dont know. Maybe its because Im a woman or something, but I'd rather have my internet and cable shut off before I wouldnt pay my security bill. Thats how much I think its worth.

I've also got a shotgun in my closet and a baseball bat next to my bed. lol. But I dont have any delusions thinking that I would probably try and jump out the window or hide if someone broke in and wasnt deterred by the alarm. In a fight or flight situation I always fly! lol cant help my instinct I guess :p

we were told by adt to stay in our walk in closet, door shut, phone in hand, with/without gun. we have a key pad in our closet. the way our house is set, they would have to come up 3 flights to get to the bedroom, through that door, then through the closet door. if they make it to the closet door, shoot through the door. thats our plan. i hope i never have to do that but we are ready. the funny part, she never supported the whole thing till she saw the movie the strangers.

I'm a bit mystified about the concept of hiding in a closet. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense, because it does to some extent. But don't most security systems set off an unbearably loud alarm sound that you can hear throughout the entire neighborhood? What burgular would run the risk of taking extra time to "rummage" when the whole neighborhood can hear that *something* is amiss?

As for moving to a better neighborhood, criminals commute to work too. I mean, I know that living in the hood the chances of having people mess with you goes up exponentially. But living in a nice neighborhood will often times make one a target as well. I mean, aren't the chances better of actually recovering stuff of value in a million dollar home than they are breaking into a studio in the ghetto?

I do believe that making your house SEEM like a place that would be more trouble to rob seems to be the best advice. Truth is, if a criminal wants to break into your home to steal your stuff or steal your car whathaveyou, THEY WILL. But increasing the obvious degree of difficulty will make your home/car a statistically a less desirable target.

Sorry that happened to you. It really sucks that good people are forced to live in fear.
