Well first off, with those weak ass punches that Lurch was throwing, no defense was necessary. However a welterweight UFC fighter would have pulverized that face beyond recognition.

Thompson developed a serious case of cauliflower ear most likely from grappling a lot without head gear. Neither fighter was the pinnacle of skill. If you have a guy trapped sideways with his arm pinned under your leg, that is one of the most fatal positions in MMA. If you cannot finish an exhausted guy pinned to the floor unable to raise his hands to defend blows to the face and head there is something seriously wrong with your skills. It's like shooting at fish in a barrel and not managing to even kill one.

Kimbo will be tough to build a federation around. He was getting beat by James Thompson, a C grade fighter at best. It will be difficult to protect Kimbo against an onslaught of B grade fighters that make up Elite XC's roster. They have some excellent fighters in EliteXC: Nick Diaz, Jake Shields, Eddie Alvarez, and Murillo Rua come to mind. Nick Diaz and Murillo Rua are action fighters incapable of making boring matches. My personal thought is that they should focus on athletes like that if they want to try to mainstream MMA further, yet maintain a hardcore fan base.
