I have a stepper in my home gym, in the basement with my bench, rack, and weights. It's a Precor 525 I got off of craigslist for $35. I love it. Usually I jump on for 5 min to get the blood flowing, lubricating the joints before hitting the weights.
After lifting, I will do some strength-cardio back on the stepper for 10-30 min, depending on how I am feeling. It is tougher on leg lifting days. I refer to it as 'strength-cardio' because I feel steppers involve more muscular work than treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals, with less vascular exercise.
If I'm in the mood, I will hit my treadmill for some interval training, 1.5-2.0 miles at an incline of 5.5-8.5 %. Speed will vary between 5.0 MPH and 9.0 MPH. It usually takes 20 min. This gives a great vascular workout. I've almost blacked out a few times because of pushing too hard. There is nothing quite like the feeling of your heart attemting to burst out of your chest.
I've always done my cardio after lifting as I feel it's a good time to burn-out your body.
