Your "friend" needs to eat at least 6 - 8 times a day or more. He NEEDS to train with the heavy basic exercises. He NEEDS to learn that gains are not made in the gym but out of the gym during rest. He NEEDS to train longer than a year and learn how to properly train before he goes throwing up his hands.
What makes you think that if he can't put on weight naturally, that he'll even hold any of the gains he MIGHT make on gear. Tell your "friend" to learn patience and both of you might realize gains don't come over night.
