So I was fooling around with my snatch today...

ahhh I got you now. I thought the "power" part, was the small knee dip to generate leg drive. I agree, I did attempt to pull with my elbows for a bit, but the Gayle Hatch videos really helped me figure out the hip explosion and shoulder drive. I've found the heavier it gets though, the deeper I bend to catch the weight.
 
no, the "power" part does mean that.

but the point is to learn to jump under the bar and lockout at the same time. then you learn to jump under deeper and deeper while maintain a solid position.

then, do it with a pull. you can do a powersnatch at first just to learn the pull, but like i said, be aware that this may mess up your pulling technique.
