Stretching and ice will help alot. In my experience it is not your shin that is the problem. The pain actually starts in the ankle, as the ankle swells it released upwards into the shin. This is why the stretch Kneel down while sitting all the way down as low as you can. Toes pointing back, you should get a nice gentle stretch on the shins.

there is a ointment you can get at some pharmacies and vet supply stores....it is called horse litament, comes in a yellow bottle and smels like shit, it will cure your problem...i had them for years and after applying that before i went running it worked wonders, the first couple times it just helped then after using it daily they were completly gone after a month...

A simple exercise would be, e.g., sit on the bench and place a 25, 35 or 45 on the ground and place your toes under it. Lift the plate in a movement that's not unlike that one does when tapping one's foot.

The tibialis anterior is the muslce that runs along the front of the shin, that is, it's opposite of the calf mucle.

This worked for me when I had painful pumps when walking in the area of my body (thought it was shin splints at first).
