As a part of my rehab, before I was allowed to run forwards I had to master the art of running backwards. I know this sounds relatively easy but it’s physically and mentally challenging. Physically because but it isolates the muscles you should be using and all of a suddenly walking backwards up an inclined treadmill quite slowly is very very hard work. The mental challenge comes because to all intents and purposes you just shouldn’t be going that way….the treadmill band is going forwards, you are facing forwards, but you are actually going backwards – thank god for the harness and the rail to grab hold of! All this time and effort got me to the finish line of my first triathlon – the London Super Sprint 2005 - and I finished 6th overall. I couldn’t believe it, my supporters couldn’t believe it and now I’m hooked!
