Your most important fatty acids are your omega-3s and your omega-6s. The body requires a proper balance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids.
Flax seed oil contains the right balance of these two essential fatty acids. Vegetable oils only contain omega-6 oils. Ingesting too much omega-6 with too little omega-3 creates a tendency towards inflammation, high blood pressure and other imbalances.
Most Americans ingest too much omega-6 and get very little omega-3. Taking flax seed oil won't counterbalance this. Most people need to deliberately ingest extra omega-3 to balance the vegetable oils in their diet.
There are only three reliable sources of omega-3: wild game, deep ocean fish (most salmon by the way is farm raised and does not contain a significant quantity of omega-3) and fish oils. So, fish oil supplements will give you the extra omega-3 your body needs.
Paul Bergner gives his clients the option of eating a couple of cans of sardines each week or taking fish oil for their omega-3 requirements. I think most people will opt for the fish oil.
So, yes, you can take both. Of the two oils, I think the fish oil is more important for most people. Flax oil is good nutrition, but fish oil is more balancing for our SAD (Standard American Diet) nutrition.
