oils (flax, olive, etc.)

Seed vs Oil

Hey, hasn't anyone tried taking flax seed directly instead of flax seed oil? I bought some at the herbal shop a few weeks ago and the seller swore it was just as effective. He said a couple of tablespoons per day would work fine. And 500grams cost 2 euros (2.4 US$)!

Anyone?

Seeds are also good because they provide small but significant amounts of protein and fiber. Same with nuts. Walnuts are the second highest source of omega-3's after flax (among plant sources) - a handful of walnuts will provide 20g's fat (omega's), 5g's protein and 3g's carbs, all 3 of which are fiber. For monounsaturated fats try: peanuts, almonds - delicious, and have more micronutrients.

By the way, $10 for bottle of fish or flax oil is very little, for something that is so beneficient to dietary content

Flax seeds are OK

but you have to grind them
which is not very convenient

Stick to the oil (bottle not caps)

the problem with flax seeds is that one table spoon has only 4g of fat, 0.4 sat, 0.7 mono, and 2.9 poly fat.
compare this to a tbl spoon of flax oil which has 12g fat, 1g sat, 2g mono, and 8g poly.
the flax seed oil gives you a concentrated source of the good fats.

it's also important to take sufficient liquid with flax seeds. at least 1/4 pint to each tbl spoon of seed.

At the moment I down between 6-9 tbl spns of olive oil, I usually put 3 in a glass and just get it over with, I am on CKD at the mo so I need quite a lot of fat to get into ketosis!

Man, I would say that pouring it over a salad is a much tastier way to enjoy your olive oil... it makes the salad delicious!

But beware: only extra-virgin olive oil is what you want. This is the one made out of first pressed olives. Normal olive oil is crap: refined from residuals of previously pressed olives. Stay away from that. Obviously, extra-virgin is far more expensive than normal. But isn't that the case with any virgin?:D

I can't belevie what some of you are doing to get some good fats in your diet. forget spending money on oil and other supplements and taking down nasty tasting oil, just cook every thing with olive oil like chicken and eggs, eat more fish like salmon (remember fish is also high in protein) and add nuts to your oat meal or what ever else you would enjoy them with. no spending extra cash and it all taste good, and your diet will be primo!:D
