New Powerlifting Usa Article. George Halbert Say's...

It looks as though westside barbell at least george is flat benching. Not all out, but in his article he talks about flat benching to help the bottom of the lift. Reps of 6 or so. You see i heard he is a closet bencher. Dave Tate told me he benched 640 with out a shirt. If he didt ever flat bench that would not happen. I am not saying there changing, but like Louie says in his current article, and i quote

" People make the mistake thinking that there is only one method of training. In fact there are many, and they must coexist in a continuous chain of proven methods".

Now this is just my opinion but i believe alot of people that cant bench alot or do not like ot bench alot, believe they can do lockouts and speed which and throw on a shirt and bench big. I dont think so. How many guys do you see , or ok know that can bench 400 ish maybe 450 ish raw and go over 600 with a shirt. Not many if any at all.

I myself do this with deadlifting. I am really getting into my good mornings and rack pulls and i know there is a carry over to my pulls. I proved it. But the difference is iam hitting those muscles from all angles. With bench you are neglating weigh pushed off your chest. Not 50% but some freakin weight. Dont pause just touch go but you non benchers out there are not feeling what real weight feels like up to 6 inches off your chest. You knwo what 50 to 60% feels like and assume your shirts will take up the bnottom 6 inches or so then your finely tuned triceps will then kick in. And it does to an extent. All you 100% westsiders should have strong top end strength. As most of you know the only difference in my training and westside is i bench heavy raw instaed of speed work. Then 72 hrs later i hit heavy boards and shit. So my only point is this westside works so dont just give it up, just throw in some flat benching, and you might up your shirt bench.

It snot necessary but since George Halbert does it , i figured you future benchers who dont get PL usa would like to knwo he throws it in his list of exercises.

George

You hit on some great points. But one thing Louie has always said in his articles was George did things slightly differently than most of the guys and Louie didn't want to print what George does, as alot of powerlifters are not that advanced and may try it anyway. Same as the circa max cycles for squats.
I read that he used to experiment on speed day with 3 sets of doubled mini bends on dynamic day. I think that would kill most 500 and under benchers.

HHH

i dont know if you realize it jay but there are alot of guys like myself that read your responses/posts and find them very informative. there are a ton of people on this board that read posts even though they never post/comment themselves. thanks for adding another perspective. keep the info coming.

Triple H. Can i call you that? Your right George is very advanced. And does freaky things in the gym. Thats why he is one i look up to for his style. He does what works for him. You gotta respect that.

p03t1c thanks bro, i appreciate what you said. Like i say every week now, "i wanna us all to be strong". If i see or learn someting, or a trick i always pass it along. And alot of people dont get Mags or talk to the big lifters in person and there are lots of changing and inovative things going on. I knwo Louie is currently researching some Chinease leverage for benching. I dont know if any of ya'll ever noticed the arch and leverage chinese use. Should be interesting. Especially once he puts the westside spin on it! Just something i heard though.

Taiwan

I have seen pictures of the lifters from Taiwan. Especially the women. Some of them have less than a 4 inch stroke. The back arch is incredible. It looks like they will break in two.

What issue is that article in?

I just got jan 2002 today (my country has slow magazine suppliers)

ps jay...i finally got the issue with your photo in it. Its kinda weird seeing a photo of someone you "know" from the internet.
you are one thick SOB.
anyway........

did it mention what day they(he) do it?

I know they do straight flat benching on speed day sometimes (i think 1 out of every 100 lifts) after the speed benching is finished to test strength.
are we talking about flat benching as a max effort exercise?

Jay, although I don't share your ability or affinity for raw flat benching, I do throw in some heavy singles after speed work about half to 2/3 of the time. I will usually following my 8 triples hit a single with about 325, then one with about 350 or so. But I really do this just to test my bar speed, not to try and gain a new raw max. Going heavy on the flat bench raw is tough for me, but doing a couple of singles per week has been beneficial. When I get to the point that I am hitting 500 after my speed work I will let you know. BTW KP was doing that at the time that he hit the 722 @275, so it may be a day or two before I am posting that I have acheived this feat.

Yes HHH Chuck is insane! He has to be to able to lift like he does. Not only that someone who broadcasts over the internet he will punch out anyone who calls his squat high has to be fuckin nuts!

Endpoint , thank you for the compliment on size. Even though i am a powerlifter i do wanna be big too! The new article by Halbert is in the March 02 issue. So hang in there you 'll get it. They didnt say what day they do it in.

Brian what did KP do? Hit 500 and then shirt up and got 722? I heard him say before on powerden that he did floor presses with over 600. He close grippd raw 585lbs. Who knows. I seen him warming up and even though he didnt struggle he didnt go over 500 before his shirt went on. BUt dude he warms up with speed sets and 365 to 405 was fast as shit! Or at least his triple with them were. I dont know if he was actually performing speed but when you do as much speed work as them your instinct is fast. And both George and kenny are fuckin fast ass benchers.

nice posts jay...
intersting on some of vids and with like patterson...
patterson doesnt really appear to follow some of louies advice about pressing in a straight. in the video it seems that he is pressing in a definite arc...i always kind of thought it weird that you could increase without actually benching raw,...
