I guess this depends upon the type of gym that you train at. Most seriously strong guys wont find what they need at a fitness centre or alot of commercial gyms. So they train at home of gyms specifically designed for those wanting strength rather than looks.

I go to many gyms in my area and can count on my hands and feet all the people that can get 400lbs ONCE with good form. Of those I can count on my hands the few that can rep it with good form. So alot of these "internet lifters" are spinning tales.

I agree in that many people exaggerate when on the net. However, many of these people have done the lifts in a powerlifting meet and can back up what they say with records.

Hell in the NFL, 405 is a great lift. Its what eddie george benches and he is 240 cut. Is he weak? I dont think so.

Compared to a powerlifter he is weak.

I myself dont flat bench, but close grip bench(2 fingers in the smooth part of the bar) and can hit 4 plates for reps easy. So to all the guys not at 400 lbs yet, dont listen to that aint strong shit. 400 lbs is strong, but maybe not compared to the 700lb lifters out there, but to the other 99.9 percent of the population you will be strong as shit.

You hit the nail on the head......it is all relative. I think those claiming 400 isn't shit are comparing themselves to other lifters and not the general population.

I dont see how people can talk down on that shit even when they have blasted past the mark. Its so arrogant. Like ted arcidi says, most these guys putting up these numbers with fucking wraps, shirts made from kevlar and all kinds of bullshit can barely hit a 500 raw lift.

Shirts are not made from Kevlar. If you want a good example.....Powerlifterjay benched a little over 600 in one of the shirts that you think does all of the work........he can do 550 raw. Shirts don't do as much as mostpeople think.

Besides this has nothing to do with a how you look. This one guy I seen hit 400lbs 10 times looks like shit. Like he doesnt even lift. Than a built up bodybuilder in the same gym can only get it once, but has twice the muscle development.

Powerlifters dont give a shit about looks.....as a rule of thumb. Powerlifters are about getting as strong as possible. Bodybuilding is about looks. But if you want to compare what you bench press and your a bodybuilder, be prepared to be told that you are relatively weak.

There's only about a dozen lifters in the world that have benched over 700lbs, and yes of course they were all superheavys.

Go to a real powerlifting meet and tell me anyone in the 220lb and under class looks like shit.

You forgot about George Halbert. 733 at 215lb bw. :)

The power clean is not a powerlifting competition movement. It's not even an Olympic lifting competition movement. It's an Olympic lifting training movement.

So what type of "competition" was this exactly?

yea u stand corrected again guru..... power cleans are olympic lifts.... aka clean and jerk.... the snatch is major olympic lift which is basically a power clean "movement" as you would say....:D :o

I hate to correct you but a clean and jerk is entirely different from a power clean. You might find this site helpful:

A powerclean is a specific movement that is very different from both competition lifts.

no its not.. i used to do both every week for a long time when i played football.. it is basically the same thing... in common words the only difference is the grip.. feet movement and putting the damn bar over your head.. now u may be thinking of the snatch vs the power clean .. but either way it is still done in the olympics....:)

Okay - what would you guys consider strong?

In my book a bench 100lbs over bodywieght you are above average in strength. 200lbs you are extremely strong - well above the norm. And if you are benching 300lbs over your bodywieght your a freak.

Most people can't bench their own wieght let alone 100lbs over their bodywieght. Its all a matter of what your goals are - who cares what others think or say about your achievments.
