If you are using a razor, make sure it is very sharp (new is best) and clean. Apply warm water, either in the shower or bath, to the area you are going to shave to soften the hair. Use a liberal amount of shaving cream and shave in the direction in which the hair is growing. It might be difficult to tell in some areas but do your best. Use short, smooth strokes [I am still talking about shaving here so get your mind out of the gutter] and rinse the razor under warm water after each stroke. If you shave against the direction of the growing hair then the razor blade will lift the hair shaft upwards and cut it below the skin line. The hair will then recede under the skin and produce a red bump or irritation. This will gradually go away as the hair grows above the skin line.
Alternate method is to wax the area. It will last longer but it can also hurt like hell. There will be some reddening of the area too when you wax but there should be no itching.
If you are going to use hair removal creams, test it first on a small area as they can be very irritating to the skin. Whatever you do, don't use hair removal creams around your genitals.
If you are shaving for an upcoming show or photoshoot, make sure you shave 2 to 3 days prior to the date as the camera will really pick up all the red bumps.
