i didnt tare mine, but i severly pinched something in my shoulder, i wont ever do them there agian....... bb push press/military/push jerk/split jerk are whats great!!!!

i used to do smith machine military, then i went to free, holy shit, i could barely balance the weight my stabilizers were so bad...
 
go with the free weight barbell press

do them without back support, requires more balance. i hit 157 for seven last night, strict reps, supersetted with bw pull ups. great pump in the upperbody. actually ohp are better choice, even more balance required. unfortunately i have a drop ceiling in my basement, not enough room to lock out. good luck.
 
Doing the military press machine helped me get from 85's to 90's on shoulder press (dumbell). I was at a standstill with free weights and it really helped me break the plateau.
