Do you believe in Mythical Creatures such as:

i believe there is all sorts of shit out there our brain and bodys just arnt complex enough to see, feel, or interact with, so while they dont exist to us, they still exist, at least in the abstract, in some form or another

I have always wondered about Bigfoot.. there are so many so called sitings however no hard evidence has ever been found...

no

nor santa clause

nor tooth ferry

nor any other supernatural being - supreme or not...

cryptozoology? no, all bullsit. irony is there is plenty of room in evolutionary design space for these creatures and many "monsters" have existed that were far more interesting. dont forget 99% of life on earth is extinct. btw i am more bored than you.....in that i actually responded to this crazy post.

No.

Add God and Jesus to that list.

There is plenty of historical evidence for the existence of Jesus. Evidence for the Holy Trinity however is kinda lacking.

IMO discounting God is tough because God can be defined in many ways. Food for thought is 'what came before the Big Bang'? The Vatican defines this period as the realm of God...........everything after is Science's territory apparently. Also, as all of the laws of nature go out of the window under extreme circumstances (e.g. singularities)......singularities etc themselves are supernatural (never mind how the Big Bang singularity came about).

I think too many people are too quick to discount the supernatural.......as somebody else said, our senses are limited so it is conceivable we miss a lot.

Sorry about rambling :) Just spilling thoughts out via my keyboard..........

Cryptozoology is all bullshit? It's pretty arrogant to assume that we are aware of and have caught and logged creature that exist on the planet, especially since new species are constantly being discovered. I guess that panda bears, mountain gorillas, snow leapords, komodo dragons, giant squid, giant octopus and many many others are all just figments of our imagination then, since they were once unproven "mythical" creatures that were classified in the cryptozoology category.

This is one of my favorite subjects and I wish that more people realized that it goes far beyond the typical "Lochness/Bigfoot" crap that always headlines the conversations. Yes, those two creatures exist, but there are alot of other things out there in the crypto world that dont get the press, but are alot more fun to research and read about.

samoth, please don't challenge me. it gets us nowhere. well, maybe you'll learn something.

you are wrong, i'm afraid, because there is more than one meaning or sense in which the word 'mythical' is used. as long as any one of those meanings apply here (and it seems at least one does), the use of the word is appropriate. yet, at the same time, that particular sense of the word doesn't require that something not exist in reality.

It seems, according to the major dictionaries I checked (perhaps the Urban Dictionary would work better for you), that the definition of myth is intrinsically linked with: A) a belief, which is inherently in itself, and B) false or imaginary ideas, stories and beliefs.

what do you think language is, son?

mythical (in this context, one could say) = relating to myth, or the subject of a myth. i think we'll agree the examples mentioned qualify.

and yet, if something is the subject of a myth (implying that some/many/most people think it doesn't exist), does that mean it necessarily does not exist?

address that, and speak of nothing else.

and the concept of belief is fine...we can do with that. what you believe and what is real are not necessarily the same. you are limiting the word for your convenience. i'm just pointing out an obvious line of reasoning.

You're obfuscating things. A belief is just that -- something unfounded. A belief. A belief is not dependent on truth. One can believe anything one wants to; this has nothing to do with truth. It has everything to do with belief. Myth is bound to belief.

I suspect you're tying this in with the word belief too strongly, thus associating this in with similar idea of religious belief, wherein such people have some belief that they spend their entire lives worshipping and stuff, arguing beyond any doubt in their minds that it is indeed true. However, this exactly concretes the definition of myth with belief and a lack of truth. HTH.

A while ago I was working in this Eastern European city...
So I go on this tour with a bunch of middle-aged artists.
We went to this park that the guide said that the park was filled with little fairies (think Tinkerbell, not Pick3).
I stood there and watched as all these 40-somethings were running around the park giddily.
They were sure that they were chasing fairies.
I still think they are dumbasses.
I didn't see a fuckin fairy.

One year when I was little and lived with my grandmother, she feel asleep waiting for me to fall asleep Christmas Eve and didn't get the unwrapped Santa presents out before I woke up. I walked in there that morning and didn't see the presents sitting out and was confronted with the grim reality that I must have been a bad boy that year in Santa's eyes. So my grandmother comes in there and doesn't say anything, and I don't mention it because I'm embarassed by the fact that she must realize I was bad because Santa didn't leave the presents. So a couple of the presents that I opened, she looked at the toy oddly and said, " I didn't put that there, I guess Santa has started having the elves wrap presents this year." Then for the next few weeks, I can remember her randomly giving me stuff for no reason. (the hidden presents that she didn't put out from Santa)

There are giant salamanders in the Trinity Alps of California

I do kind of believe in ghosts though.
I think people have a lot of energy in them and it doesn't always get reabsorbed into the earth - all that energy has to go somewhere.

What about mythical stories about real people, such as the myth of George Washington and the cherry tree? It never happened, but it doesn't make George Washington any less real.

Jesus was apparently a real person. However, stories of virgin birth, being the son of God, and resurrection are plainly mythical.

Washington wasn't a mythical creature, he was a real person. Rumors about what he did and how he did it are just as mythical as the rumors I hear about Snoop Dog and what he does. No one is arguing that Washington or Snoop exist, and exaggerations of their activities are not myths. In this context, George Washington is just as mythical as Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre or Nelly, which does not follow. Hence such a use of the term is incorrect.

No, not religious energy...
People are filled with all sorts of "energy" right?
So we die - where does it go?
Same with all living things- it gets reabsorbed back into the earth...
But sometimes I think that there is a little left over - that is what makes shit fall off shelves and makes lights flicker on and off.
Or maybe I'm wrong - but I think that there are many things left on earth that we cant quite explain.
Regardless, I still think those fairy chasers are dumbasses.

What "energy" do humans, or any animals, have that is not the direct result of the metabolic engine?

this has morphed into CREDULOUS personality types vs. INCREDULOUS personality types. some folk believe in ghost, demons, bigfoot and gods. I've had many friends and associates espouse such beliefs. these were typically bright individuals as i dont associate with morons (except puddlemonkey) it is not a matter of intelligence or lack of that dictates ones belief in the fantastic or improbable but rather a personality style. i am a skeptic and cant understand how people believe in a benevolent anthropomorphic judeo christian god when all the evidence points to the contrary. we can argue all day but science is science and when something is presented without a shred of evidence it is mythos. it may be fun to romanticize and wax philosophical about such subjects but we should leave it at that. i think the sciences are just too boring for some and they need conspiracies and ghost. thats cool with me!!! if everybody liked the same horse there wouldnt be much of a horse race

there are many species that we have found that were thought to be myths before we finally found them. The example that comes to my mind is the giant squid. So, it is possible that something may exist, just probably not as fantastic as big foot, nessy, etc.

Mr. dB said:

That is kind of what I was talking about.
I've always wondered what happens when people die...So imagine you are in your 20's and you get shot in the head and die...What happens to all the metabolic energy running around in your body? Does body temperature elevate when people die?
I have no idea, I kind of wonder about that sometimes.

Although, it is easier for some pure science people to lable everyone who disagrees with them as stupid, some of the truly great scientists have known to always think big and not to discount everything that is not yet discovered.

Most people discount extraterrestrial life? I figured most people believed in it one way or another, depending on if there exists a popular television show like the X-Files showing at the time. Television greatly influences the masses through fictional shows like Star Trek, X-Files and CSI, for better or for worse.

You did hit one nail on the head, though. I'm like a walking sack of estrogen. I would probably breast feed the planet and give everyone flowers and kisses if I had the chance...LOL. Overly emotional, romantic, and maternal -- my downfalls.

I was thinking more along the lines that you'd chop our balls off and send a sympathy card. :worried:

(i have a little dose of antisocial personality and i am good at readin folks. self help, therapy, selfawareness and gettin lil older have conspired to mellow me out. read: not dangerous ......anymore)

I think you should start a thread in which you psycho-analyze everyone on EF.
That could be interesting.
Do me first please.

IQ range for lawyers seems to run a pretty wide swath. I have met some who make me wonder how they passed the bar. Others are brilliant. Ironically, the richest lawyer I know is also the dumbest...:lmao:

A good memory must help dullards get through law school.
