calf/shin problems

About 5 weeks ago i went jogging 3 miles. i didn't run for a few years and i weighed 220 at the time. about 3 days afterwards i tried sprinting for maybe a minute. after that i was on the ground in severe pain because they hurt so badly and i could barely stand. all through the 5 weeks and even up to now whenever i move faster than a walk they start hurting like hell to the point i get wobbly legged. what's up with my calves/shins? I was thinking maybe stress fractures, but could they just be very painful shin splints or even something else?

the only way I got rid of shin splint was to CONTINUE running every day

in 3 weeks they NEVER CAME back again

it hurt so bad it was like running on pins

Try pulling your socks up all the way to your knees when you do any kind of running. It looks bad, but it works for me when I play basketball. I always get shin splints if I don't pull my socks up all the way.

I'm currently suffering from the same thing. I can only run for about 5-10 minutes before I'm crippled. I've been told that compression helps a little....we'll see.

im not positive, but DONT DO THIS!!!

word on the street is running through shin splins can lead to fractures/breaks

Walk on soft ground for a while, build up gradually. I went from doing lots of squatting and next to no cardio and then joined boxing and my calves and shins felt painfull.
Lightly skipping on a soft surface can help. Whatever you do just don't hammer your legs the first time out, build up the intensity gradually.

that's exactly my scenario, lots of squatting and no cardio lol. i've been increasing my cardio through HIIT by doing burpees on the grass. after all the jumping i can feel a little bit of pain but no where near sprinting. i'm glad to know that's probably helping them little by little

i suffer from shin splints myself and I can give you some advice.....

1. Get a good pair of running shoes and get fitted by a professional

2. Start of slow in your running/jogging dont go balls out right away

3. Get checked out by a podiatrist

I recently went to a podiatrist and he gave me some inserts for my shoes/workboots and although I havent ran any yet on them I can sure tell you that at work it feels like I am walking on air and my feet feel great!

He said that if this doesnt work to come back in 6 weeks and he will fit me with some custom made orthotics and take it from there, the ones I got from him were 40 bucks and they are made for people with flat feet like myself.

you also want to make sure you dont have compartment syndrome which I think is farely rare but still possible and the podiatrist can check ya out for this.

Great advice. ^

I also get bad shin splints and have flat feet. My feet/shins seem to like running in New balance and Sacony best. Mizzuno is also supposed to be pretty good. Nike is garbage for running. Custom orthodics if the shoe change alone doesn't help.

Your shins are not used to running at your weight yet so build it up slowly and if you shins hurt, rest, don't plow throught the pain (I've done this it doesn't help).

Ice them after running, it feels so much better.

Good luck.
