Just wanted to post up and stress to my elite buddies about the danger of abcess and catching them early. About three weeks ago I noticed a small welt on my delt (no pain, redness, fever, etc..). It drew my attention, but didnt really think much of it because i didnt have the popular symptoms associated with an abcess. Not only this, but i ALWAYS use a new needle, alcohol swab the bottle and injection site, wash my hands before injection. I further never inject water based and oil based AS in the same shot, rotate sites, and massage to distribute the oil. In other words everything possible to avoid an abcess.

Well two days ago i decided to find out exactly what was in that little welt so i popped a 23g 1" in the sucker and drew back. Well 7cc later of pure puss i felt it was time to take a little trip to the hospital. Remember not ONE symptom of abcess was present except for this little welt which i could have easily overlooked. Doctor provided me with a script for keflex (antibiotic) and told me to take it for two weeks. After that i come back and if it didnt work we will slice and dice. So the bottom line is...watch yourself and stay SAFE.

I had about the same type situation at one time. A welt on my glute about the size of a pea......didn't want to get alarmed cause I didn't have any of the symptoms either. Left it go for about a month and it never grew or gave me problems. During a regular physical with my DR. I mentioned it and asked what he thought. He stuck it and pulled puss. He didn't mess with antibiotics, but laid my ass open right there....it turned out to be a hair folical that the hair went crazy and corkscrewed down into my skin basically creating a zit under the skin. The DR pulled it out and the hair was about 2 to 3 inches long. Sewed me up and then sent me for antibiotics.

What a nasty little hair, especially to make me think of an abcess........bigmk this could be the same issue......just a thought.

Metamorphosis,

You had what is called a 'pilonidal cyst'. It is relatively common in men who are overweight, hairy, and sweat a lot (sorry). The most common location is the upper aspect of the asscrack.

It is unlikely that the deltoid abscess is from the same process.

I'm had a pilinidal cyst removed about 4 years ago. It was hereditary. I was actually at my alltime leanest and only 19 yrs old. It was from a hair and it was exactly where tholdren said.

I take keflex (cephalexin) for acne, once I probably go to accutane I'll stock up on the keflex just in case something ever pops up-not saying I wouldnt go see a doctor though...
