I BECOME RONNIE COLEMAN
IN 6 SHORT MONTHS!!!
SEE ARTICLE FOR DETAILS

by Brent LeBlanc

I had an interview with Ronnie Coleman after this latest Mr. Olympia win in 2000. During this interview I asked him what his secrets were for gaining muscle. To my surprise he was quite open and honest and said that 4 years ago he was a puny 180 lb police officer in Arlington ,TX. Although he knew it was a particularly bad scenario for a cop to be taking an illegal substance such as steroids, he went ahead and bought some testosterone, deca and dianabol for a 12-week cycle.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE . . after that first cycle, Ronnie was up to 300 lbs of muscle and ready for his first Mr. Olympia competition. Of course, he won.

OK, I never interviewed Ronnie Coleman, but the above tends to be the views of gear newbies and those outsiders who will never step foot in a gym. Who gives a fuck about diet and training, these guys only got big because of steroids. Oh, and how many times have you heard that once those evil steroid users go off using, all the muscle will magically turn to fat?

GOOD AND BAD TRANSFORMATION

As you may have seen my picture in an issue a short time ago, you will have noticed the dramatic change that I achieved in just a little over a month (with Jason's help of course). I look and feel a helluva lot better. In fact, for the first time in 2 years, I have caught girls actually checking me out!!!!! Amazing what some definition can do for you.

But besides the physical transformation, the other major change that has accompanied this has been a dramatic DECREASE in the amount I can lift. I used to be the guy who everyone always stopped briefly to watch me lift on the power exercises _ like squats, bench, etc. Oh yeah, I was the man. For dumbbell bench press, I was actually worried that I would exceed the maximum amount available and have to resort to doing higher reps. Higher reps are for babies.

Not any more. Now I start my workouts with what I call "normal man weights" and then slowly lift less and less as the workout goes on as I deplete the carb stores in my muscles. It's really sad. Usually for the last exercise for the muscle group I will do a machine exercise (I don't make a practice of doing these, but anyway). By the last set I am doing reps with only the minimum amount on the machine. I have been getting some weird looks from my fellow gym members lately.

OK, so what caused this decrease in lifts? I am taking roughly the same amount of gear as I always have. I mean if gear is so great, I should be lifting as much, if not more than before, having used the stuff for the last 1.5 years. By the way, while I have not proposed any sort of gear cycle in this article, you should make note that I do have a prescription from Dr. Scruggs and use only the amounts he has prescribed.

I haven't changed my training. Well what has changed has been my diet. Jason has significantly reduced calorie intake, especially restricting the amount of carbs I am taking. There is nothing more humbling than being able to squat more than 5 plates on each side then being reduced to 3 plates or less all in the span of a few weeks.

IT'S THE FOOD, REALLY

So why am I rambling on, well, because it's the food you dumbshit!!! One of the things all the muscle mags do get correct is their emphasis on the importance of food. In fact, I have read more than once that food was the most anabolic substance there is. When I started training seriously, I also began to take my diet seriously. Instead of eating ramen noodles for dinner 5 times a week and eating twice a day (if I was lucky) I began to include more and more protein and clean carbs and began eating 6 small meals throughout the day.

This dedication to both training and diet took me from 165 lbs to 275 lbs in the span of 6 months (OK, I went from 165 to 245 in 6 months, took a 5 month break, then went from 165 to 275 in 6 months) and yes, I was extremely dedicated to training and eating. After about 225 lbs, I gained muscle mass at the rate of 2 lbs of muscle per 1 lb of fat. Not the best ratio, but hey, I was completely drug free, although everyone thought I was using. And, I really didn't know any other bodybuilders, so a lot of the information I had was gleaned from the muscle mags. Not too bad I don't think.

EXAMPLE: THE BOSS

My boss had been lifting half-ass for most of the last 3 years. Making absolutely no progress at all _ size or strength-wise. He had no clue what he was doing wrong. Here is a brief list of what was wrong:

1. He had been doing the same workout for 3 years
2. He ate like a bird
3. He was afraid to lose his 6 pack abs

Everyday he saw me haul in my massive amounts of food and take up all the room in the frig _ only to have it all disappear by the end of the day. I am no Jason Meuller, but this guy needed some help.

He has a fast metabolism so I told him to eat everything in sight _ with an emphasis on getting in as much protein as possible. OK, there are more details than that and I introduced him to protein powder, but I will spare you the small talk. In the last 3 months he has put on a very noticeable amount of size _ adding around 8 lbs _ and his strength has gone through the roof. His shirts are starting to get tight and he's now got stretch marks on his arms. The guy just needed to eat like a bodybuilder.

EXAMPLE: BLOW UP MAN (BUM)

All these years I had been lifting I had only heard about guys who just "blow up" out of nowhere. Going from small to decent-sized in a short span. Except for my first cycle when I went from 260 to 295, gear never worked for me like that. But there is this guy at my gym who, in just the last 6 weeks has gone from small, but decent sized body, to something noticeably bigger.

Good stuff, don't you think? Well, there's more to the story than that. Blow Up Man (BUM) didn't really have a good base to work with _ meaning he needed to add a substantial amount of mass _ NATURALLY _ before he even thought about O.D.ing on gear. BUM is taking extremely large amounts of injectables, but especially orals _ and you can tell. I wouldn't want to be near this guy with a sharp object as in the Noah's Ark episode that would follow. Again, its all fun and games until you lose the size you thought you had gained. What??

Yep, BUM eats like shit _ fast food is a staple. And there is no fucking way he eats enough of this crap to get enough protein to build muscle. BUM is around 22 and did a few cycles when he was 17/18 _ but you sure as hell couldn't tell. Because he isn't careful, he also has a nice set of bitch tits.

Yeah, yeah, bitch tits don't really relate to food _ but his whole BB attitude can be summed up in his daily menu. He doesn't really give a shit. Thinks all the gains will come easy _ basically the stereotypical bodybuilder that most of us try to distance ourselves from.

SCARED OF FAT

You know, I have met so many people who are so fucking scared of putting on some fat that they never put on any muscle. In fact they never go anywhere in terms of their physique. Put on some mass and then take off the fat. Even the muscle mags will tell you that it's better to put on the muscle and then shed the fat later.

I can remember the first month I trained and ate well. I added around 15 lbs and reduced my bodyfat. I was hooked, but I was also finally eating the amount of food I needed.

I have talked to a number of guys who essentially limit their size by their squeamishness to add some fat. HELLO??? Do you want to be big, or do you want to be pretty? Me, I want to be big and I will do whatever I have to do attain the most muscle mass my body will support.

As an aside, they should have a "big" section at the gym and a "pretty" section.
Big Section _ here all the evil, scary, roid monsters can lift in the peace and quiet of heavy metal music. These guys would even be allowed to make loud, icky noises when they lift that might otherwise bother other members.
Pretty Section _ This would have all those "who just want to tone" or look good at the clubs on the weekend. (Of course this would include about 99% of all women). If you are scared of free weights, you would be required to lift in the pretty section.

Yeah, I like that idea.

Anyway, the moral of the story is it's the food that the most important thing, not the gear, not the training, its food. Food isn't even illegal!!!!

You know, it would seem pretty simple, wouldn't it? You have to eat to grow. Sadly most people don't get this. My sisters boyfriend has been working out for 4 years or so, and he only weighs 180lbs at 6'3. He also only eats a couple bowls of cereal a day (with skim milk), and a 'double meat' turkey sub from subway (this is all he literally eats a day). He also only works his chest, and arms, saying "I throw in some pull ups for my back, and my legs get worked plenty from running" Then he asks me why I am currently 250 at the same height of 6'3. He sees me eating up to 10 times a day, he knows I take my squats, deadlifts, rows, dips, clean and press, etc all very seriously, yet he still thinks there is some magic answer. After a while you don't want to help these people. It just gets old explaining something to someone who claims they want to learn, but really just nods, and doesn't listen. Next time the 140lb kid at the gym asks me how to pack on mass, and tells me "I'm eating 2 egg whites, skim milk, a can of tuna, and a shake a day, and i do all the hammer strength machines, but I'm not getting any more 'tone'", instead of telling him the same story, only to be scoffed at, or not be listened too, I will just nod and smile, saying "You'll get there soon guy."

this is the very reason people think that all it takes is a shot of steroid to gain 40lb of muscle, they totally disregard how much work and sacrifiece goes into developing a body worth looking at, you tell them to eat 6 times lper day, and take "X" amount of protein and carbs, and they are like yeah yeah yeah, but how much gear do i take to grow. most dont realise that it takes fuel to start a fire

Serge I would say you are one of the most up front honest people on these boards. It takes balls to lay it out to all the newbies we have coming in here day in and out asking how much gear to look like a pro, or how much gear to get to this certain size, etc. Because most of the time they act like children when they hear the truth, and just flame people. I've seen people who look incredible on this board, SAF comes to mind, and some people who take a shit load of gear, and look like shit. I bet the people on their 10th cycle, and still haven't broken 200 are the same ones who complain about eating, or actually breaking a sweat at the gym. Some would say I am bitter these days, but when you get asked for advice, and take your own time to really try to help someone, and they just give you a puzzled look, or just nod, it really gets old. If someone comes to me, and they honestly show an interest in learning, I'll be more than willing to help, but the next time someones comes up to me and asks to know the 'secrets' or what cycle to blow up bigger than Arnold, then I will just walk away.

I remember one kid asked me how to work the delts, this kid weighed 150lbs or so. I happened to be working shoulders that day, and I offered him to work with me. I told him clean and press would do wonders for him. He gave me a puzzled look, and said "No, I want to know what machine works the shoulders". That was nearly a year ago, I see that kid at the gym from time to time. He does machines all day, and still looks the exact same. Blah

this is the very reason i dont bother with any1 at my gym anymore, i come in put my headphones on and go through my workout and leave, if some1 does aproach me with a legit question i do tend to go an extra mile to help that person out, but at the same time when you have some dickhead come up and ask what to take to loose 40lb of fat and while gaining 50lb of muscle all in 2months??? i mean what do you say to that? i used to try and explain how the body works, and that those 2 goals demand opposite opproaches in terms of diet and training but at some point i realized that im not getting through, so why bother

Bump. This seems like common sense, but sometimes it's the basic stuff that people ignore.
