Bench Press/Squat lifting routine

Hello all,

Back when I was in High School my wrestleing coach had us on a routine where
we would lift 5 sets of 3 on your bench press and Squat, at around 90-95% of our max.

Is their any benefit to this type of lifting program?

We would only lift Bench or Squat 1x per week.
 
It sounds like a general "catch all" workout that many high school coaches employ. We can attain better results with a slightly more programmed system like the 5/3/1 or 5x5. On the other side of the coin is Sheiko Training.
