Would you prefer a practitioner, therapist, doctor to have....

Some life experience under their belt or who only have "book" knowledge of the things they are tying to teach you?

I saw a therapist years ago for panic attacks. He was so "matter of fact" like he had NO clue what he was saying. One day I asked him if he ever even had a panic attack and he said he never did. I knew at that point, no amount of his medical school knowledge was going to heal me.
It's when I found a therapist who walked the walk and talked the talk, is when I regained my stamina.

I feel my work is more effective because I've walked the walk. I've had and have illness, panic disorder and been in horrible situations that I fought my way out of so I am able to pass the wisdom along.
I have a client with agoraphobia who has not left her house in 3 yrs. After the first time seeing her, she left her house. She told me she's been seeing a therapist in her home for 2 yrs, but this therapist had no idea how panic felt.

For me, I like healing with those who took the journey and made it to the other side and can pay it forward. But that's me.

depends.

My doctor doesnt have to have personal experience with certain ailments in order to be able to treat me.

Therapy is different IMO.

so are you saying, if you struggle with choking people in there sleep, you should see others who did the same?

i actually agree with smurf, wtf is this world coming too

therapy and dr's are different

I prefer to work with people that can offer solutions that will work with me.. being an individual and having different needs..

I'm not needy, but i do need to follow someone that knows more than i do about something before i can learn from them.

I get most of my medical advice from strangers online and my prescriptions come discreetly packed.

Yes, sorry, I was not clear. Not MD's! My Md's are cool cept for my derm. who think she knows more about lyme than me, but my other md's rock!

Yes, therapist PHD or MD's or really just any healing practitioner like them

oh gotcha. yes, I can see how it can be helpful for a therapist who has gone through it before themselves.

but, if i have schizophrenia, i dont want someone who is also schizophrenic to treat me. or borderline personality disorder. or a lot of other things.

also, this is an incredible mememememe thread

:)

No, not at all. I was thinking about this because my friend who is a therapist who posts on FB commented to a girl about her marriage and this girl is really clueless since her own marriage is falling apart. So got me thinking....
