Things have gotten way out of hand.

This is NOT a pro show - 91 NPC qualifer. Things were at their very best.... the begining of the end if you will. That was a very interesting year, not just in the NPC, but with the IFBB and the Haney/Yates/Labrada/Shawn Ray/Vince Taylor 1991 legendary Olympia battle. What a great year.

What happend to the sport? It has gone so downhill it's not even funny. Weider is a joke and not involved, the networks have no desire to show it, basically no following. How many years till it dies?

In 5 years BB'ing will be footnote to Fitness and Figure shows. The girls are WAY more marketable for the masses (supps).

When is the last ime ESPN had ANY BB show on? 91 NPC I think!!!!!

Interesting perspective. I tend to side with you too. It's little doubt the stigma attached in recent times to AAS and it's useage by anyone in BB'ing has everything to do with the lack of TV coverage.

the 91 npc was the first time i heard of or saw bodybuilding, i was 9. i thought those guys were the coolest most badass ppl ever, thats what made me want to start working out when i got older. shawn ray was my inspiration, if i hadnt seen that i might have never got interested in building my body up to my own wants. i might be 180 lbs still like i was at 17. and i agree with access, this whole thing with aas and how its being blown up by the govt and congress, im afraid to say it but i think BB is on its way out. i hope im wrong, but i think its gona happen.

The physiques that take trophies how are not attractive to the masses. No one ever said Zane looked like a freak.

Popular culture is real, and can make or break any entertainmet venue, sport or not. Look at how long it took baseball to recover from the strike. Years... and if it weren't for the gear induced long ball it may have never made it back.

BB, Strong man, PL'ing, whatever... people are afraid of us, don;t agree with us, and think we look silly. They are the ones watching TV and buying Cheetos... so thier voice is MUCH louder than ours.

interesting thought! and you are right i think.

dont know if it will die because there still plenty of money in advertising all of the bodybuilding supplements and exercise machines, but i do agree its out of hand

Definate reason why it won't die....Hello America, this is what a body should look like. (Okay, maybe not Olympia big, but you guys get what I'm sayin here).

I remember people saying the same thing in 1976.

that because the body builders of today look fucken ridicolous imo.. have you ever looked thru some of those mags they have the cheaziest photos.. i saw a series of shots with jay cutler and gunter working out.. they looked like two fags in there poses they were standing over eachother with these dumb looks on there face.. theres no class in bodybuilding.. when shawenzagger was big it seemed to have more class.. the physiques looked like works of art not genetic mutations.. people were startled by the size of the oldtimers, the new guys just look like cartoon characters that will never appeal to the mainstream it might to us well not really to me id rather look like the old school bodybuilders..

Nice fucking post bro. You always have well thought out threads. Those years in particular were special to me regarding bb shows and the whole lifestyle. I competed in the Mr. Teen (state Im in) and won overall and took 3rd in the mens open middleweight. I really started following bodybuilding that year specifically.
Sorry for the rambling. Bottom line is that the guys at the top of the federations need to go first and foremost. A new hierarchy is what is badly needed. Then they need to find different marketing people and attack the tvnetworks with a fresh approach. I could sell it.
