Tell me something they call a sport that you feel is not a sport.

i realize that, but nascar is the most vile of them and the least sporting, so its easier to pick on. the majority of their tracks are oval, while at least f1 tracks require mental activity.

i dont consider horse racing a sport, at least not for the jockeys and if you're jockeying a machine, well thats in the same vein i guess.
I disagree, but I grew up around horses. Have you ever ridden? Riding a horse, especially the way they do (standing in the stirrups) is damned hard work, especially when you're about 105 soaking wet (in some races the jockey AND gear cannot weigh more than 115 lbs., for the Derby they get a grand total of 126). So you got a person who weighs about as much as an elementary school student, controlling something that weighs as much as a small car moving at about 40 mph in close formation with other small cars that are all capable of freaking out at the drop of a hat (thorobreds are the nut job of the horse world).

Both the jockeys and the horses are athletes, same goes for greyhounds.

Riding or driving a horse under racing conditions is totally incomparable to driving a car. Horses are alive, unpredictable, and rely on their riders/drivers to maintain focus. Even something as simple as starting the horse off running on the wrong leg can make or break a race.

Sports should have an offense and defense. If something is not trying to impede your progress it is not a sport, and that comes from The Strongbow definition of Fucking terms. This is an actula book, you can get one for $19.99, PM me for a discount code.

im an anti-speciesist, so i consider it a form of exploitation, not sport.

even if we're talking machines, it still doesnt fit my definition of sport. it requires skill, endurance etc.. i understand that, but its hardly the same type of activity as soccer, basketball or cross country skiing.

also, just because an activity isnt a sport, that doesnt mean its invalid, at least not in my book. all of the ones i put in my list take skill.

If you tried to smoke a cigar and drink during a NASCAR race (a legitimate sport), you'd die.

yes I beleive that's why I said I'd pull a "Dale Sr"....you know, flying in to turn 1 and cracking your skull into the steering wheel. What....still too soon for Earnhardt jokes? :worried:

If you tried to smoke a cigar and drink during a golf match (a skilled activity), you'd fit right in.

not at the professional level. Just like I can get in a car right now and drive around at 100mph drinking and smoking....and can do the same with golf. Only difference between the two is that the lack of proficiency in both cases has potentially vastly different consequences.

Anyone who thinks golf is a sport should probably believe darts, pool, pinball, quarters and beer pong are sports too

You've tried golf and sucked didn't you? I'll let you in on a secret.....most people don't play cause they think they're tiger, it's a nice sunday walk with your boys. And if a couple of your boys happen to be raging assholes that like to play bumpercars with the carts and powerslide em all over the course.....well that's just a bonus.

Professionaly speaking golf was probably more of a game until Tiger came along and forced people to become athletes if they wanted to win consistently. Just look at the change in some of the guys like Mickelson. When Tiger first showed up Mickelson was sporting legit manboobies. Like you could see them clear as day even through a baggy shirt. Different story now. THe new guys coming onto the tour are legit athletes. I read they are having to detune some of these guys clubs otherwise way too many people would be driving the ball well into the mid 300's while most courses are still set up for the old school guys that drove it on average in the 260's-270's. THey already officially changed the groove pattern on the irons to reflect the increase in athleticism they were starting to see. With the old grooves guys were muscling out of heavy rough and still putting backspin on the ball.

If I read all that can I add it to my list of AR books for the summer?

Yeah, this guy just wreaks of fine-tuned athlete to me.

there's actually some sense to that. Like MMA and boxing and whatnot shouldn't be called sports....it should just be called 'combat".

 that's a new one on me, I've read the definition but I'm still not clear.

Guess that means you're a vegetarian?

:whatever:

You can't compare horse racing to soccer, but you neither can you compare marathon running to bodybuilding or baseball. Let's talk about baseball for a second. Babe Ruth was considered the greatest there ever was for how long? Did you ever see pictures of him? The man wandered up to the plate drunk HOW many times?

Too many people getting too hung up on semantics in this thread, IMO.

The essence of sport is competition, whether with self or against others. If you only compete against yourself, it's still a sport if you can make measurable progress.

If the outcome is not impacted mostly or entirely on chance, then it's a sport.

SB always makes perfect sense :)
