"Take on empty stomach" pills making me crazy.. Macro? Fonz? Anyone?

I'm with Nelson on this one...

L-tyrosine is supposed to compete with tryptophan in the gut as they both have bulky "R" substituents... I'm not sure about 5-HTP (5-hydroxy tryptophan). Chemically, it IS an amino acid.. but not the kind that gets incorporated into a protein.

5-HTP is one decarboxylation away from seritonin. I'm not sure if it is taken up the same as tryptophan.

Andy

The molecular structure of L-trytophan is far bigger than all the other amino acids. Therefore, it essentially competes against all of them when absorbed.

The only thing you can do in order to improve L-trytophan absorption is to raise insulin levels. Insulin clears the bloodstream of all the amino acids, therefore leaving your ingested L-trytophan to be utilized far more effieciently.

5-HTP converts to 5-HT on paper. However, in reality the conversion is negligible. IMO, its a crap supplemment.

L-trytophan works quite well. However, its not available in the US. The FDA banned it in 1997 I think( No surprise there).

Fonz, you are a genious (bow). But this time I gotta tell you from my experience, 5-HTP is the BEST supplement I've ever taken. On my last diet, going really low cal + cardio, I got after several weeks carb cravings that I didn't know ever existed. On peak, I could eat 15,000 cals a day. It was nuts out of this world. As a fitness man, I was exposed to something I didn't know existed. Such a dramatic change in Serotonin production that controls your mind instead of you controling your mind. It's really hard to explain. But it's un-controlled binging (and believe me, when it comes to disipline I am a master, but this is different). It was horror back then half a year ago. This time around on my cutter, I noticed this shit coming again! It was the start of bad things. I got several carb cravings that I couldn't control(scarry shit). I had several 5-HTP bottles I bought last time but didn't use it back then. I started taking 200mg a day and noticed that body developes tolerance. Every two 2-3 weeks I have to go up another 100mg (Now I'm 200mg twice a day). I notice a DRAMATIC change. I won't kid you if I tell you this is the most noticable change I've ever felt from any supplement so far(Trust me, I took a lot through life). One day I forgot taking the second 200mg and I could clrealy notice the carb cravings coming in again. I could write you more and more text about my recent updated experience with 5-HTP (I keep a detailed log of everything). 200mg 5-HTP on empty stomach keeps me non carb craving for about 6-8 hours. I'm talking strickly chemical related carb cravings.

Anyway, for me 5-HTP did and still does (I have still a 6 weeks for my cutter) wonders. I could never believe a supplement will have such an effect on me. BTW: I'm a scientific kind of guy, like to blood glucose myself, make various blood tests just for knowledge now and then. I'm not bullshiting. Damn. I start to sound like I own a 5-HTP factory..lol

BTW:
For anyone who didn't experience Chemically related carb cravings in their life, I wish you never will. It's not just that you crave carbs... You actually feel like a crack-addict. Non controllable. As a fitness enthusiast dedicated for the sport and bodybuilding, for the first time in my life, I could feel what Bulimia and binge eating disorder people feel. Without being in their shoes you'll simply think they are pathetic fat morons with no self-discipline. That is, until you feel it yourself.

What is your doctors definition of an empty stomach. I used to take crixivan that had to be taken on an empty stomach three times a day, and it made it tough for PWA's to get enough caLories into their system because of it. They later refined what an empty stomach is. Ask you doctor for example if you can eat a fruit roll up during your fasting time, or a cup of coffee, or a small piece of fruit. You may be surprised by the answer. Thanks!

5-HTP has little use in body building.

Calling it a crap supplement is incorrect.

It has benefits in other parts of the body.

I'm not going to get into the same argument a bunch of us got in when it first came out.

Serotonin(5-HT) is converted from 5-HTP via enzymatic conversion.

Problem is serotonin can either be produced CENTRALLY(good) or PERIPHERALLY(bad), from the above mentioned enzymatic conversion.

There's no way to know at ALL how the 5-HTP is being converted inside your body. None whatsoever.

Quite a few people developed problems with their aortas(Cardiac problems) due to the peripherally converted 5-HT.

L-Trytophan has none of thses side-effects. It is 100X better at controlling serotonin and therefore hunger/mood.

I know you're a smart chap, Fonz.

From personal experiences, there are applications where 5-HTP is beneficial.
