Knox Co. Deputies Investigate Possible Hate Crime

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- In a West Knox County neighborhood, sheriff's deputies
say heated words between neighbors may have crossed the legal line.
When a black man, Troy Whiteside, living in a mostly white neighborhood
found a stick jammed in his back yard, with the bark missing in the
middle,
and a stick nearby that could be used to make a cross, he called a deputy
to
investigate.
[LSN: Let's hope he never goes walking in the woods -- they are a whole
lot
sticks laying near each other in there.]
The deputies say that although the possible cross doesn't appear to be a
crime, what happened after the officer arrived, may be.
"This is the struggle that blacks have traditionally dealt with, and this
just shows that it's not over. It's not done," Whiteside says.
[LSN: The great black liberation struggle against racist sticks.]
When the officer asked Whiteside if he'd had any trouble with neighbors,
Whiteside showed him the string his neighbor put up to stop Whiteside's
wife
from using the neighbor's driveway to dodge cars frequently parked in
hers.
[LSN: He didn't want other people driving in his driveway! Heaven
forbid! A "hate crime" itz!]
"He was outside and he came down and his exact words was, 'this is my
n****
fence," Whiteside says.
The officer confirms that the neighbor, Jim Haldeman, also accused Troy
Whiteside of bringing down property values. And that he should expect
trouble
for living in a white neighborhood.
Haldeman says, "I'm not being prejudiced just because he's colored. I just
don't want him crossing into my driveway."
But when asked if, taking his use of the n-word into account, Haldeman is
certain he's not prejudiced, he says, "He (Whiteside) was pissing me off
yesterday, so I was using some profane language. I mean, that's my right.
That's everybody's God-given right. They can cuss if they want to."
And when asked if by using that word, Haldeman doesn't think he's inviting
trouble, he says, "Well, you know what? If he don't like it, he can move."
Troy Whiteside says he plans to keep his wife and two kids living where
they are. And he'll leave any action up to the neighborhood association
and
law enforcement. "Now, I'm not at all fearful of the guy. But it's just
amazing that in 2003, in Knox County, in a middle income community, that
you
cannot live in peace without this kind of ignorance and bigotry."
Whiteside says he's not accusing Haldeman of putting the stick in his
yard.
But the Knox County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident as a
potential crime of intimidation, which says you can't intimidate anybody
into
moving out of a neighborhood. If you do, it's a felony.
[LSN: Maybe they could arrest the tree that provided the sticks. Or
better yet, launch a class action lawsuit against all trees and other
producers of sticks, declaring that these sticks were "hate" "assault
sticks",
and thus something the general public needed protection against. "Of
course
we won't ban bushes," they'll say, "We just want dangerous hate-assault
sticks
off the street."
