Bikes are only as dangerous as the person operating them. Had something happened to me it would have totally been my fault for doing something I know way better than to do.

Not necessarily. A good friend of mine is in critical condition right now because a 17Y/O girl was driving with a learners permit and ran a red light and hit him head on.

Back in "the day" I used to ride crotch rockets all of the time. After having a couple of drinks and getting on one doing 120mph down the highway in the middle of the night, the next day I put them both of them up for sale and never rode one again.

How stupid was I? I could have seriously hurt sombody or myself for that matter.

The biggest concern of the motorcycle rider should be the larger vehicles that surround them.

As far as helmets go - I'm pro choice. Here in Nevada if you ride a cycle that's less than 50cc you don't need a helmet, insurance, license or registration. That's the only reason I have a scooter - and it's fun to ride (except last Friday - but I'm to pissed to talk about it).

Went for a motorcycle ride with some friends today. We were going around a small very tight hairpin turn when I ran off the road. Like an idiot I looked down for a sec and ran right off the curve. Luckily there was a small erosion gulley that I steered into which jumped me back up on the road. If it had given way or I had missed it I would have been flung down a steep hill into a group of trees. Happened so fast I didn't even have time to get scared. I just got up out of the saddle like you're supposed to and corrected my mistake. Didn't even get much of an increase in HR.

Just thought I'd share.
