Finishing off a bottle of flax..

New member
I'm on the last few drops of my first bottle of flax, and as I've been getting closer and closer to the bottom of the bottle, it's been getting thicker and browner. Taste hasn't changed much, and I figure it's just a function of the specific gravities of the oil vs. that of the particulate, rather than the flax spoiling.. since I've no experience with that.

Any thoughts?

It is probably the lignans sinking to the bottom.

In the future, you always want to shake up the bottle before you drink it. But as long as there's no smell, you're ok.

After about 3 weeks after opening it starts getting getting darker no matter how much you have been shaking it. It's part of the opening and closing that is letting in the oxygen. After about 4 weeks and if I have any left I have to mix the last few spoonfuls with my protien drink because the after taste starts getting a little strong. Just my experience.

I think it is the particulate. I got sick of exactly what you are describing and went with the regular kind. I am near the end of my first bottle, which I have had for over a month, and it is still a clear golden color. I keep it in the freezer and open it about twice a day.

I shake it extremely hard before I use it...every single time. When I do this, the taste/texture is the same with each serving.

My 2 cents

The thickness and awful smell/taste is a problem if you're not refrigerating your flax. Otherwise, I've never had a problem with flax. I usually purchase the large bottles and finish it in about a month.
