Disc/neck pain

Has anyone ever had a problem doing behind the neck barbell presses? I usualy go in the front, but decided to go behind...BIG MISTAKE. Felt a twinge near right trap...felt like a bad crick in my neck..I said fuck it and kept training. It has been 3 weeks and no improvement. Hurts like hell to look up. Pain starts in my trap and shoots out past my shoulder. I have not missed a workout...but I worried I might have hurt a disc or torn something...any advice?? Thanks in advance.

A lot of things can go wrong there, but it sounds like you pinched a nerve. Typically, there is some swelling which exacerbates the pain. Muscle relaxers and/or meds designed to reduce swelling/inflammation work well for this. Ibupofrin & Ice are good ideas also.

Sometimes, the pain is caused by disc compression or even a displaced disc, so x-rays are not a bad idea either. Chiropractors (good ones) treat this pretty effectively IMO if it isn't serious.

I've been there, and I know it sucks what you're going through----hang in there and take care of it, so it doesn't become something chronic. Oh and BTW, behind the neck presses are a terrible idea, but you already know that now.

Pimpin, check your private messages.

Anyone have experience with this? My orthopedic said he thinks I tore the disc, but we only did an x-ray. I went to gym today to do chest and was significantly weaker. No real pain, but I had to go from 100's to 65's on incline dumbbell press. The right side (injury side) could not handle it. Can I request an MRI to be sure it is a tear. Doc wants to do 4 weeks of PT and see if that helps, then maybe a cortizone shot. BTW, I am in week 4 of anavar/winny/aratest. Should I stop??? Damn, this sucks.

Thanks for the input. He did an exray and said that he thought there was a tear in the disc, but how severe he could not tell. I went back to the gym this week and have had a SIGNIFICANT loss of strength. I am in week 3 of aratest at 500mgs a week, and week 4 of anavar and winstrol tabs so this is not normal.....can I request an MRI? He wants to do PT for a month and if it does not heal he wants to give a cortezone shot. What do you guys think? The strength thing worries me. There was no extra pain while pifting, but I had to drop from 90's on my first set to 55's (on incline db press) and still struggled, especially on the right side, same as my injury. What do you guys think?

Bummer SunTzu18, injuries just suck. I started getting all sorts of wierd aches and stuuf when I did behind the neck's and finally had to switch, just too much strain.

The key to get things healing fast is to get any swelling down. Did your doc recommend any medication? If not, perhaps you want to try some aleve or naproxin if you can get a script for it. Naproxin(sp?) is the main ingredient in aleve and it works well. The cortisone would kind of be a last ditch effort but will likely due wonders for the localized swelling and once thats gone you should heal much faster. The key is to not aggrivate it for a while so you may want to be carefull with your choices of exercise.

Have a quick recovery bro.

Im just getting over the same problem, so Id suggest you consider taking time out. I say this as I slipped a disc in my neck 3 months ago which resulted in all feeling down my left arm vanishing - I was numb 24hrs and at one stage was in a sling as any movement would cause severe pain. Depending on the severity of the pain it will eventually vanish moving up the arm and into the shoulder - this will result in big weakness. I currently cannot benchpress more that 40kg (embarrassing) when 12weeks ago I was benching 100kg - this is because my left shoulder and tricep is very weak and gives way easily. My left arm is now physically smaller although not in pain.
See a chiropractor, take Naproxen and rest if its bad. Your strength will slowly return - mine is just about and then take it easy in the gym. If you dont the problem will re-occur as I had this a year ago and rushed back into the gym when I was still knackered. Good luck and be positive.........if you can. Forget about a physio, in my opinion theyre useless.
