Burning out on the 5x5 Need help!

Hey bros,

I have been using the beginner 5x5 for a while now, and I have maid some great gains on it. It definitely got my strength back up quick. However I feel that I am getting burnt out. Mostly with my squats. Every time I ramp back up to around my max I get quad pain and it kills my gains. I have to deload, and go with two workouts per week. I have dropped the wed squat to try to lower the volume on my quads. just doesnt seem to be helping. I feel like im taking too much down time, and I am not getting the added strength and size I need.

I am current tying to compete in strongman. I have one event day of the week and it is sunday. 3-4 hours long. I take Monday off. and then start back on Tues/Thurs/Sat.

I am looking at the Texas method, which is basically
Tuesday (Heavy + Volume):
Squat - 5x5 (sets across)
Bench - 5x5 (sets across)
Row - 5x5 (sets across)
Hypers
Dips

Thursday (Light squats)
Squat - 2 x 5 (80% of Monday weight) (not sure I can do these)
Deads - 1 x 5 heavy
Overhead Press - 1 x 5
Pullups/Pulldowns – 4x8
Abs/GM

Saturday (Medium)
Squat - warm up to 1x5 max
Bench - warm up to 1x5 max
Row - warm up to 1x5 max
some kind of arm iso's in the 8-10 rep range

Im not sure what I might be doing wrong, just an fyi, my squat form is very good. so its not due to that. I think it may just be an imbalance in my quads and hams. I am thinking about adding some more ham work 1-2 times per week. just to see if that helps.

Im not sure if I should switch to something else. I really need to push the envelop on the strength end, and also gain weight and size in order to be a solid competitor in strongman.

current stats
6ft
265lbs ->goal 285lb

Squat 550lbs ->Goal 650-700lb
Bench 500lbs -> doesnt need to go up much but anything would be good
Row 365lb -> Goal 450lb
Push press 275lbs -> Goal 315lbs+
Dead 600lbs -> Goal 700lbs+

Any and all advice is welcome

Only thing I could think of is maby your calves are around there strength limit already? You are already way stronger then me so I don't know, wish I had more experience in this but I don't.

maybe you need to use a more advanced routine, with the big weights your moving weekly progression maybe too much. but you didn't give any training history so it's hard to say especially as your form is good. how about mixing in more strongman lifts or concetrate on deads if they dont hurt the quads?

yea, this is why im looking at the Texas method, it is a bit more advanced than the beginner 5x5.

Any thoughts on running WSB - since they rotate the ME squat every few weeks.

But the Texas Method should be interesting, if I recall the Monday workout is the stimulus, Wednesday is just a filler to keep your CNS primed and Friday is test day. I plan to try this soon as well.

I did workout 1 this week, where it is 5x5 across, for squat, bench and row. it was definitely a bit harder. However I like it b/c I can use less weight on the bar, it doesnt seem to hurt my quads as of yet. so maybe it will cut down the total volume of high intensity work on my quads. who knows.

im also looking at wsb and DC right now.

Why don't you take this to a powerlifting site like Dr. Squats? You are already beyond any beginner or intermediate lifter. If you're not a genetic freak I'd say you're already and advanced lifter having a joke at our expense. You need experienced lifters to help you.

Please dont get me wrong, Im not making a joke at your expense. I am just starting out in strongman, and im having trouble fitting it all in. The added volume of the strongman-training day is making things difficult. its 3-4 hours long and very intense.

Obvious liner periodization isn’t going to work. Im looking into Conjugated periodization or otherwise known as Westside, but I just don’t know how to fit it in my 3 day schedule
