I was in the Army from 82-85 and then back in for DS. 19k (M-1 Tanker) Although I had a GT of 144 I chose a combat MOS because I wanted to be outside, blow shit up, etc. I had 118 college hours and went in as an E-3 and made E-5 in 16 months. I don't regret it for a minute and wouldn't change a thing. Combat MOS's always tend to view support personnel as REMF's.....not fair but that's just the way it is.

You would not have had enough timein grade required to advance to E-4 then E5 back then to have been a Sgt. I served 88 - 96

yea to piggy back on what pick3 said , dont waste your time (by waste i mean get something out of the military) by goin army, go air force or go navy, get some good training that you can use when you get out. artilary is cool ,but how will that benefit you when you get out....it wont you will be no better off than you are now.

I beg your pardon. Advancement to rank is/was based on the needs of the Army and the unit, among other things, including GTscore, education, performance reviews, etc. I most certainly did make E-5 in 16 months from E-3! In what world is 12 months TIG E-4 not sufficient to make E-5!!!
That is why I recommended a combat MOS to him. I don't know what your MOS was but although my advancement was as fast as was possible at the time it was in know way unique.
I'm offended that you even questioned it.
