I don't know if critical is the word to use, but the depletion workout primes your body for the refeed.

I started a modifyed keto diet wed. and am well into ketosis this am. They have always worked really well for me for fast wt.loss. I don't do a carb up day. I do more of a carb cycling thing. I have found that I can still eat a fair amt. of carbs and still lose wt and stay in ketosis.
