The State of Ohio and the Right to Carry a Concealed Weapon
Alerted by noises from outside at 4 a.m., Mesa, Ariz., resident Thomas Winfield got his pistol, went to investigate and found a man trying to jimmy his car's ignition with a screwdriver. Winfield ordered the man from the car and was holding him for police, but when the man lunged, Winfield shot him once, mortally wounding him. (The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Ariz., 11/6/92)
Have you ever traveled out of state? Have you ever been to Florida, Pennsylvania, Indianapolis, Kentucky, or any number of other states with concealed carry laws? Chances are you probably didn’t even notice. Believe it or not, lots of people currently carry guns in Ohio, these people range from off duty police officers to citizens who carry despite Ohio law. This is definitely nothing to be afraid of, as I will prove within the next few minutes.
Ohio's Constitution gives our Right to Bare arms for self defense and security. The present law is unconstitutional and should be changed immediately. Currently only off duty law enforcement officers, and people with special permits that carry large amounts of money or have had a threat on their life are allowed to carry weapons. Our state should not fear law abiding citizens; they are not a threat to anyone in our society. Carrying a concealed firearm does not make anyone a criminal, if it did, why do we have so many police officers? It would be impossible to provide a police officer for every citizen, which is why we are responsible for our own protection. Ask yourself this, what is worse, knowing someone has a gun or not knowing someone has one? The state of OHIO has let criminals carry concealed weapons for the past 50 years. The law-makers and governor of this state have led the people to believe that it is safer to not allow any law-abiding person to carry a gun for self-defense. I say law-abiding because criminals couldn't care less for the laws currently on the books but take the guns away from law-abiding citizens, and we become victims and servants of the law-makers. The United States Constitution's 2nd Amendment and the OHIO state Constitution gives the right to keep and bear arms for defense of one's country, state, family and self. The concealed weapon permit in Ohio would look something like this. Any applicant must first be at least the age of 21 and a resident of Ohio. If the minimum age limit is reached, the person applying would then need to attend and complete not only a safety course but an educational course as well. Once the class is completed, a 6 months waiting period goes into effect. This is done so that no one would be able to get a permit right away, and also during this time a quite extensive background check is conducted. Any person found convicted of any crime will be denied. Who do you have to fear except yourself?
44 states already have right to carry laws. If the laws were causing more deaths and troubles than when right to carry laws didn’t exist, don’t you think those states would change the law or ban it completely? This is not the case, take the state of Florida for example; Florida has had a right to carry law passed since 1987. The only changes they have made to the law, was to make it easier to obtain the permit.
There are statistics that show that CCW states have lower violent crime rates than others. There are also stats that show that they don't have lower crime rates. The fact is that regardless of which statistics you believe, it is agreed upon by all that crime rates DON'T GO *UP* with concealed carrying laws. Today over 2,000 law enforcement officers and some 50,000 Ohioans are supporting concealed carry reform right here in Ohio.
In Conclusion, I’d like you to remember these points.
Only qualified Ohioans who pass a criminal background check and a firearms training course could receive a CCW permit.
Criminals are carrying concealed weapons right now. Allowing law-abiding, trained citizens to carry will level the playing field.
95 percent of the time, simply showing a firearm is enough to stop an attack.
There has been no rash of "road-rage" shootings, no increase in violent crime, and no increase in accidental shootings in any state that has implemented CCW laws.
Ohio is one of only six states that prohibit its law-abiding citizens from privately carrying a firearm.
All five states surrounding Ohio permit their law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms.
Both the Conservative Right and the Liberal Left are against CCW permits. This is the sign of a reasonable law.
Ohio's Constitution reads, "The people have the right to bear arms for their defense and security."
I urge you to call or write your governor about the issue of CCW and let him know you want the right to protect yourself. In Ohio we let 16 year old children get behind the wheel of the most deadly instrument in the world: A motor vehicle.
