Do any of you computer guys know.. does norton/mcafee actually stop hackers/viruses?

None of it is absolute protection. In fact, Norton (in my own experience), causes more slowness and hassles than it stops. The best protection you can have, is GOOD, THOROUGH backups. Everyone will, and I said WILL, have a virus or attack or crash of some kind, sooner or later, and WILL lose everything. Be ready with a complete backup, and no sleep lost. And I leave all the Windows 7 security turned on, unless I have to turn it off temporarily to install something, etc. I used to be very anti-Microsoft automatic security crap, but I admit that I've had the fewest problems by using just that.

Norton and Macafee are utter dung and sloooooow down your computer.
AVG is OK, but have had it and gotten a virus so I'm not to crazy about it

I've used Kaspersky for the past 3 years...much better than Norton or McAfee based on my past experience.

malwarebytes antimalware and superantispyware are also good programs to have. i used to be a spybot fan, but i've found it just sucks nowadays.
i agree with ortiz.. avast 5.0 is better than avg. avg is good, but i've never had a problem with avast, and it always preemptively alerts me if something is going on and blocks it.

Worked with PCs for over 2 years and I can tell you almost as a fact that having Norton and McAfee are almost worse than a virus itself, they slow you down, updates freeze and slow down your PC, they are annoying as hell AND offer no higher/relevant significant protection over freeware antivirus, I have found Spybot Search and Destroy and AVG free to be the best freeware.
