Would you prefer a practitioner, therapist, doctor to have....

oh gotcha. yes, I can see how it can be helpful for a therapist who has gone through it before themselves.

but, if i have schizophrenia, i dont want someone who is also schizophrenic to treat me. or borderline personality disorder. or a lot of other things.

If I had any of these afflictions and a therapist did as well and fought it and learned great coping skills and was able to teach them to me, I would be all for it

Some life experience under their belt or who only have "book" knowledge of the things they are tying to teach you?

I saw a therapist years ago for panic attacks. He was so "matter of fact" like he had NO clue what he was saying. One day I asked him if he ever even had a panic attack and he said he never did. I knew at that point, no amount of his medical school knowledge was going to heal me.
It's when I found a therapist who walked the walk and talked the talk, is when I regained my stamina.

I feel my work is more effective because I've walked the walk. I've had and have illness, panic disorder and been in horrible situations that I fought my way out of so I am able to pass the wisdom along.
I have a client with agoraphobia who has not left her house in 3 yrs. After the first time seeing her, she left her house. She told me she's been seeing a therapist in her home for 2 yrs, but this therapist had no idea how panic felt.

For me, I like healing with those who took the journey and made it to the other side and can pay it forward. But that's me.

You're cute!
And you seem like you're seriously f'ed in the head with alot of baggage.
It's seriously turning me on!

Umm, no, panic disorder does not make someone f'ed in the head.
Those who don't get help for what ails them (and everyone has something that ails them)are the ones who are f;ed in the head.

I'm a perfectly dysfunctional just like every other human on this planet, but with a lot more wisdom.

And everyone over 40 has baggage, it builds character and when you grow up, you will see that ;-)

from a therapist stand point this is pretty ridiculous, I've never done drugs so I cant hel p people with substance abuse? I've naver been divorced or widowed so I cant help them with that process? I've never personally had cancer so I cant help them with that either? I've never had a panic attack so there go anxiety disorders... never been raped or mugged so no forensics... c'mon blueta you should know better than this... people learn and teach through experience, these doesnt have to be acquired first hand....

Cindy, not saying those without experience are not good at what they do, but how can one heal if they've never really felt the pain?!

Like you and I understand your situation. Imagine going to a therapist who didn't understand abuse and just thought you were dramatic or nuts, but then you see a therapist who says "I lived what you did and I get it" and can break it down for you so you can work on getting past it all.
Just a quick example

well then they wouldnt be an effective therapist, now would they?

dont have to have been abused to be able to help someone with that issue, IMO.

Can see how it could be beneficial though but definitely not REQUIRED in order to be effective in facilitating healing.

I disagree and would never want to see a therapist who's young and had no/to little experience in what they were trying to help someone else overcome.

I do know better, I have lived double the life you have and have lived through more experiences than you.
They do not HAVE to be acquired first hand, but it makes for a much better therapist if they have. Fact really!

It's like a overweight person who never works out, being a trainer because they took the courses. Who wants to take advice from someone who cannot relate?

Perhaps, but there is a better chance to heal when the person helping can offer better advice or ways to heal.

Sure they can still be good at what they do, but my question was really, would you all prefer someone who's lived it or only knows 2nd or 3rd hand?
