Working at Macy's for Christmas

I've been floating between Ladies Apparel and the Clinique Cosmetics counter.

First time I've ever done the seasonal retail help thing. It's actually been really fun. The crowds got noticeably bigger this weekend, but still not insane. The regular employees tell me next week will be way worse though. The supervisor in Ladies is a bit of a hardass, but it's pretty much not gonna bother you when you know she's only going to be your boss for 4 weeks. Everyone else is really nice.

Ok great story.

Cool story rob

Do you just need extra holiday cash or something

thought you were a baller

I worked electronics retail for three holiday seasons. Quit the day before thanksgiving this year. Simply wasn't going to do that another year. Working in retail is the primary reason I hate human beings.

I dated a chick that sold ladies shoes in a dept store in college ... she made commissions and did better than most of us in those days

Macy's usually has some hot nice chicks at apparel and clinique, nice to see they keep it that way :)

:bigkiss:

I did notice they only staff well put together chicas at the cosmetics counters if you know what I mean. Not necessarily great looking, but always very well groomed, makeup, hair, clothes all spot on.

I can see that. Doing it for 3 or 4 weeks is kinda fun because I dig the Christmas decorations everywhere in the store and I've never worked in a dept store so it's different. Doing it long term though would be a totally different experience I'm sure.

Electronics retail attracts the biggest itstains of society also. I know people who work in apparel retail and it's a lot different.

um...yer gettin close to the one big downfall to this gig. All the awesome shit I keep buying. All the money Macy's is paying me is like going right back into their coffers.

LOL that would be me ... what kinda employee dicount you get? Do they have YSL and Laura Mercier? :qt:

LMAO! I KNEW you were gonna post up and ask me that. :lmao:

Pretty sure they don't carry YSL or at least not much or I would've noticed it by now. You know how stores will sometimes have like 1 product by a particular line or something. They do carry Laura Mercier though, but the Sephora store in JCPenny has more. That's the problem with the traditional cosmetics counters in mall dept stores....they try to carry too many different lines I think and end up only having like some of each.

YSL makes great lipstick but paying $34 for one makes me want to kill myself. I only get it with my shoppers rewards. Laura Mercier tinted mostirizer and minreal powder are get but again the price is retarded and I can't get them with my shoppers rewards.

Do they carry the perfum Flowerbomb? You got to go smell it I got a bottle last week it makes my panties wet.

This is my first Holiday season not working in almost a decade. I have a friend who recently quit his deskjob and he has similar feelings as me.
We both love the fact we work whenever the hell and we want/no commute and we both make more money doing what we do now and don't have a boss really (except people like needto) etc..
The one thing we both miss is the camaraderie of working and meeting new people. I hated most customers and many of my co-workers, but the ones I did like became some of my best friends. Since I throw parties as well now I miss the ability to network to bring more people to events as well. I may go back and work one or two days a week at a mall that is real close where my GF is about to start working at on days she works. Maybe not, I'll see.
I have a ton of free time right now and can do whatever I want. If I were single I'd be back at the mall in a heartbeat for obvious reasons working part time and not for the money :)

My wife worked the mall for the past 6 years and HATED it, crying, the customers, the hours, the floor sets, the drama, the people

She recently got a new job and loves it

I'd rather get neutered than work at the mall

Totally agree. Being a manager is a tough life. Cherry picking whatever shift you get and not having responsibility is far different. It is amazing the amount of work the companies have the people do at the store. The shit pay is kind of outrageous too. I had to bounce around to get decent money and worked incredibly hard. I have always hung out with some really beautiful women and people have always asked where I met them. Same answer every time. Any place you can pick up chicks without really trying and getting paid is a good gig for me. And the girls are always 21 if that. It's kind of like a teacher who has students who have a crush on them. You see them everyday and end up bullshitting with them just as much as working. I have thoughts of being a PT on the side as well. All the money I would make on these types of jobs I would blow on trips to Ibiza etc..

oh god yeah Lartinos, for 12 bucks an hour they can shove it up their arse. Seasonal is different, like you said, most are people in need of extra cash, bored, fat etc

woooooooo mama....the crowds are gettin fucking heinous.

The women's apparel actually seems to be slowing down a bit but the cosmetics counter going crazy. Getting shittons of men coming in now looking aimlessly at fragrances. I'm getting questions like "what do I get for my grandmother?" and "What are the perfumes for black women?" The worst is when they start trying to describe how they think it smelled when they think they remember smelling it once a year ago on a co-worker or an ex-girlfriend.

I wish I was on commission sales cuz these dudes are buying anything I recommend.

I dunno. Everytime I think of macy's I think of miracle on 34th street. I'd love to work that store during xmas. Nostalgia.

Sounds fun for a while, I worked in retail (shoes) for a couple years, it was kinda fun because you could get good discounts and try all the stuff on whenever.
If I were you I'd come home each night smelling like six different perfumes, with sample makeup all over my face ;)

As the only nonwhite chica on-duty most of the time at the Macy's cosmetics counters they seem to think I'm the ethnic expert.

I actually have nasal allergies to most fragrances. Luckily they really discourage spraying the stuff around these days since it seems to bother a lot of people. (Have you noticed lately when you walk through the cosmetics section of the mall stores now you don't smell the fragrances nearly as much as you used to?) All we are ever supposed to do now is spray a bit on a card or on the person's wrist.

I've always thought of working in a retail store during Christmas for the experience. I never get around to it though. It's a nice idea for me, but not enough to make me to do it.

r.w what's the deal, i thought you were caking? with the vette and nice house and all, i figured
you wouldn't need the extra cash.
times suck for everyone i guess

You people are confusing me with my parents. I have a regular house and only make 47k a year.

And last night was busy as hell! Damn. It's been getting like twice as busy as each preceding night all this week. I bet tonight is gonna be full on loco. I wonder if at 7pm we're supposed to just run them all out b/c you know there will be people still trying to shop and people standing in line at the registers.

wait, malls are open xmas eve? hhhmmm, I'm bored as fvck but not sure I could get through it without shooting someone.

It was never that busy on Christmas Eve the years I worked retail. I do remember a funny exchange on that day my first year in retail.

Guy: do you have modems?

Me: yes sir *takes him to modems*

Guy: what these aren't modems, can you get somebody over here that knows what they're talking about?

Me: I can assure you these are modems for your cable service.

Guy: forget it!

I was trying to figure out what he was looking for. A few minutes later, he comes up to me with an ethernet/cat5 cable.

Guy: see, this is a modem. You need to learn your products!

Me: oh, I'm sorry sir, my mistake.

Mind you, I was the computer tech guy there. Lol.

I work in a bar and I hate them all too, even though I'm not in a customer service position where I have to actually interact with customers. I'd just as soon kill them all at closing time, once we can't take any more money from them what good are they?

You hate life
Me too :)

People would stay 45 minutes after closing at Roosevelt Field Mall. Considering we hoped to get out at 3am, that extra 45 minutes could push it close to 4am. Black Friday I have worked through to the next day.
