What a Clean Diet Does....A Progress Report!

I should really scan in pics of me around 32% body fat-- I only weighed about 10-12 pounds more than I do now though. I NEVER ate then. I would have one meal a day and it was junk. I just figured I didn't eat much so it wasn't a big deal. Oh how wrong I was.

I got to a point where I started turning back to eating disorder habits and had the the choice to really backslide or try something new. When I first joined EF I literally just did searches and took notes. I was completely oblivious about diet. I only did cardio. It wasn't pretty.

It took me a while but I dropped 10-12% body fat and only lot a little of my overall weight. I think that anyone can transform themselves if they want it enough. It's tough for the first couple of weeks but as it all becomes part of your daily routine, you'll find yourself feeling more positive, healthy, and less stressed! Good luck with your goals!

Way to go!

Daisy...you are a true inspiration! I too thought that you were just blessed with a smokin figure...and work out to keep it. Now I see that you were where I am now. Well, I'm not as heavy as I was...but still need TONS of work.
Thank you sooooo much for posting that. That just gives me the motivation to keep up the hard work!!

Thank you for the nice words. :) Glad I can help you!

I just want people to see how important eating well is - for so long I didn't put care into my diet because I worked out. Like it would make up for the poor diet planning! It doesn't! I looked decent for so long, but once my diet went to hell, so did I. ANd now that I combine CLEAN eating wit hworking out, I am in better shape at 30 than I was at 20 or even 25. :)

wow!amazing these is what motivates people,an example that we are not prisioners of our own genes, congrats and keep it up. Daisy I now find you sexier than ever.

Daisy, thank you so much for posting those pics! They're awesome and I feel much more motivated now than I ever did before. I read all 6 pages and took alot of notes.. You look really awesome though, you must be proud. :D

Raina, that's a good idea.. you should post some pics of yourself, that way you can inspire us girls just like daisy has :D

Wow.... that sounds like me except I haven't lost the weight and each time it gets hard I take a break and fall back into bad habits. It usually gets hard at the two day mark, so I've had alot of breaks.........Ang

There is a 'Quote' button - bottom right of the posts. Find the post you want to quote, hit the button on that post and then a new window will come up with the quoted post - then you can add your post to the bottom of that. Make sense? ;)

Sounds great Daisy! I'll give that a try this time around! Last time I lost 26 lbs, although I did do a lot of strength training, I did way too much cardio & ended up losing a lot of muscle on my legs/butt. Plus - I lacked protein. I was happy w/ my results last time but I'm sure I'll be even happier this time around!!

You're a true inspiration; we're a lot alike in the sense that we're naturally solid & body holds fat easily. I'm the same way! So ever since I saw your post, you bought some hope back my way! Thx again!!

I know a lot of people were looking for a more complete breakdown of Daisy Girl's diet, so I took the diet example she listed and made a fit day account called Daisygirlexample. If you're interested in the protein/carb/fat breakdown you can click on the link below and get a basic idea. This will probably not be spot on but it should be close enough to give you some starting points.

http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJournals.html?Owner=Daisygirlexample

Overall, very helpful. BUT - the fat is WAY WAY WAY off. The Egg calculation is based on 1 CUP of eggs - including the yokes. 41g of fat? NO WAY! lol So the calories and the fat are thrown off by this. I ate 5 whites and 1 whole egg. :)

Fish Oil capsules - but not regularly. I took them a couple times a week. Not a big fan of them, but I have never taken them consistantly to see if they offer benefits.

Fat sources were typically almonds, PB, 1 egg yoke and olive oil.

1300 sounds about right - give or take. Remember, I didn't limit veggies at all. This was also my "base diet" - some days I ate a little more if I needed to. It is likely I ate closer to 1500 a day on a regular basis.

AND, I was NOT worried about muscle loss. Way back in the beggining of this post I said that muscle loss was NOT a concern. I know my body pretty well and I knew I wouldn't lose THAT much muscle anyway and all in all, I only lost a couple pounds of muscle. I also said if I did it over again, I would change some things. But, I was trying to lose the most weight in the least amount of time.

I have spent the last couple months adding muscle - I am now about 10-12 lbs heavier than the pictures, but I have added almost 10lbs muscle and only 1-2 lbs fat. My diet is in the toilet, but whatever. Finally, I am starting to balance out my upper/lower body!

Daisy,
can you give me more info about your cardio? How long was each session, how fast did you go, do you know how many calories you burned in each session? Any info you can give would help, even though I know it can be a very individualistic thing.

My cardio was a little crazy....but like I've said, at this point, I wasn't afraid of a little muscle loss.

I did cardio 5-6x a week (mostly 6x) for 60 min AM and *sometimes* 30-45min in the evening. The evening cardio was only 1-3x a week, it was something I threw in there if my diet hadn't been great during the week. Lifted 3x a week.

Cardio was mostly machines - Precor Elliptical, Running (tread or outside), StepMill. Intensity was as hards as I could work for that time....so for 60 min I went as hard I could stand.

Calorie-wise, I don't know. I never pay atention to the machines, since they are so inaccurate. But I would guesstimate about 650-750 calories in an hour. Of course, as I lost weight, this number went down...since calorie burn is higher for the heavier people and lower for the lighter. And machines don't take into account muscle mass and/or afterburn effects.

Good work Daisy! I have no idea what my problem is. I have just lost my "gym drive". It is sooo hard to get back into the groove.
I am trying to loose the 10lbs I gained over 5 months (we built a house...got way off track) Anyone think it is a bad thing for me to ditch the weights and focus on cardio only for now? I will pick the weights back up when I get rid of this FAT!?

Fat comes off through diet. Muscle is built through diet. Diet is very very important. Calorie surplus=fat gain, calorie deficit=fat loss. Clean diet=fat loss, so-so diet=not a lot.

Weights will help get rid of the fat faster than cardio.... muscle is very metabolically active...it burns many calories. Cardio also eats msucle (especially on a calorie deficit), so too much cardio and no weights equals not good news for fat loss.

Clean diet, moderate amount cardio and heavy lifting = happy tight woman

Props to Daisy--I can't believe i missed this.........You go girl!

RADAR

thank you so much Daisy!

you have definetly made me bound and determined to work hard and accomplish my goal. you look great!!! way to go.

Thanx for those pics, Daisy, thats what I'm up against. I was in damn good shape about two years ago, kinda like that after photo. Then I went and left my training and diet in the gutter. So here I am pulling my ass up off the floor (literally -----at least that's how I feel) Anyway thanx for the inspiration------------and the reminder of what I can be again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Daisy_Girl! You have totally inspired me to finally get myself into the shape that I so want! I have been up & down with my weight, tried every sane & wacky diet I could find but never stuck with the ones that worked for long enough to give myself a real chance. So after seeing your pics, reading all of your posts ( & everyone else's too) in this thread & am committing myself to at least 6 months of real doing - clean eating, weight lifting & cardio (with one cheat a week). At the end of 6 mos I will re-evaluate & I would put money on the fact that I won't even recognize myself.

Thank you so much for posting your before & after pics. It is true that so often I feel that girls I see that have bodies that are in great shape were just born that way. I now see that it takes committment & hard work, and that it does pay off!

Kudos to you, DG. You look awesome & have a level head on your shoulders. Thank you! :)

Can't believe I am posting these pics, but things B Fold said to me motivated me to do so. :) This is just a reminder of what a clean diet and smart training can do for a body. My diet was all clean foods, no drugs, and I trained my ass off (quite literally!).

I'm posting this (and killing my pride!) so nobody - new or old - underestimates the effect of a GOOD DIET. Diet is #1 in changing your body and reaching your goals. No ifs, ands or buts. Don't make excuses, just do it. Now.

Here are pics of me taken April/May of 2003 (6 months ago). I had just taken about 6 months off eating well. I was working out, but minimally and not very hard. My diet consisted mostly of, well, of crap. I am normally "in shape", but due to life's stresses, I "boycotted" being healthy for awhile and paid the price. I gained over 30 lbs (up to 166lbs from 135) and was 30% BF (up from 21%).

Now, these were taken about a week ago. I am over 30lbs lighter and approx 15% BF. I lost over 10 inches around my hips, almost 10 inches around my waist, around 3 inches off my thighs. If you need more pictures, I have a gazillion in my gallery.

It is somewhere in the first couple pages of this thread.

Basically, when i eat clean, this is what it is.....

Meal 1 ~8am
5 Egg Whites, 1 Whole Egg
1/4-1/2 cup Cream of Wheat (made w/water, cinnamon, splenda)

Meal 2 ~11am
Protein Shake

Meal 3 ~2pm
4oz lean meat (usually chicken, turkey, eye of round)
3oz red potato/yam
Fat Source (usually 1oz Almonds)

Meal 4* ~5pm
4oz lean meat
Green Veggie (unlimited)

Meal 5* ~8pm
Protein Shake (usually post workout)

Meal 6 ~9:30pm-ish
Repeat Meal 4 OR Protein Shake
Fat Source (usually 1tbsp Olive Oil or 1tbsp PB)

*Sometimes, Meal 4,5,6 are slightly different, based on when my weight workout was, or my activity level of the day. I never drink more than 3 Protein Shakes a day, actually, I try to only take in 2.

:qt: Wow! you are totally unbelievable! you truly are an inspiration to everyone..i didn't eat the pizza that they ordered for the office today.. I ate my tuna on ww bread w/ my big bottle of h20..and it's sooo funny, i saw this right when the pizza got here..and i sat at my desk and thought..now do you really, really want that pizza..and after reading and seeing you..i said, naaah. it's not worth it! I will have my cheat day on Sunday. So why cheat now! FORGET IT! :)

I read this whole thread! I can not believe that you are 30! that is amazing! you rock!!!! When I go home, I'm gonna look at the rest ofyour pictures, after my leg workout. lol. here is an example of what im eatting and doing..pretty much, body for life..have you heard of it?

break- 1/2 baked s.potato w/ splenda, cinnamon and i can't believe it's not butter, 2 egg whites, 1 whole egg. water or tea

snack- protein shake w/ skim milk, sometimes w/ a piece of fruit.

lunch-salmon salad w/ w.w. noodles, on lettuce

snack-protein shake

dinner- grilled chicken w/ green beans..yesterday i had a chicken quesidia..on a w.w. toritia (sorry I CAN NOT SPELL!!)

if i continue to feel hungry, sometimes, i'll eat cottage cheese w/ half a scoop of protein powder and splenda...

as for weights, 3 days a week 2 days upper, 1 lower or vice versa..and i do 6 sets..like this
12 reps x 10 reps x 8 reps (increase weight here)x 6 reps (increase)x 12 x 12 and the last 2 sets are back to back. no rest..

cardio is about 30 min. 3 days a week, intervals. and somedays, i do hiit. for a few minutes, before a weight workout..just to get my heart rate up..you know..

so, if you could..just let me know what you think. if you have any pointers on how to tweek this, let me know-I AM ALL EARS! LOL :dance2:

:bikinimom <--I WANNA BE ABLE TO DO THAT AND LOOK GOOD! :)

THANKS SO MUCH

Daisy_Girl you look great! For the past 6 months I've been training and as soon as I start seeing results I get sick. Can you please tell me how you went about your clean diet and trainning?

Great job, Daisy_Girl!

This is probably the thread for me that encourages me not to give up.
Thanks for giving us some much needed inspiration!

Daisy I can't tell you what an inspiration you are to me!!!!! I have always been an athlete and in great shape up until after the marathon I ran last summer, after which I broke up with my guy of 5 yrs. I definitely boycotted eating healthy and religiously working hard in the gym. I am back on track now, but the most difficult part for me is DIET!!! Reading this thread helps me get the motivation I need to take it day by day when it comes to eating clean. I am going to be taking before pictures Monday and I am going to post them so there is no looking back :mix: Thank you for all the inspiration and AWESOME advice!!!!

Okay Help, Mom 32, needs your thoughts.

Okay, now I need help, new to the post, but an old timer

Now 32 5 foot 8 and 152.... looking to go back to 132 of old size... Before I had Jes now 3, I was 130 around there and an aerobic director, weight lifter, etc.. don't have the time like I used to..

I can do the atkins diet and did it, because I gained 86 with my kid and lost almost all but 10 lbs.. but dont' want to have to be so restrictive.

Just want to jump on board again and forgot how to do it, because it has been a couple years.

I can't go to a gym right now, so I have to find a way to lose the 20lbs with the right diet and exercise at home and need help..

So help!!!

Nadine

Its awesome to me to know that you did all that in 4-6 months! I'm so bummed that i've gained so much. It is about diet ( which is unfortunately the hardest part for me=( but its inspirational to see that if i work hard i can get back to where i was and it doesn't have to take years!@!! You look GREAT!!! =)

Nads

I've realized of late that my main obstacle to losing fat is my impatience. I want it all gone tomorrow. So I am constantly revising my diet and fitness schedule for optimum, SPEEDY fat loss. This all equals no fun or good food for me!!!

SOOO....I have decided that, because the weight didn't appear overnight I cannot expect it to depart overnight. I had fun gaining (Hagen Daaz Chocolate Peanut Butter), and I'm going to have fun losing. It may take time, but it will happen.

Since I have decided to give myself time I don't feel so burdened and the challenge doesn't feel so heavy. I weigh 156 and have a BF of 31-32% and 6 months from now I hope to have a BF of 22%. Slow ands steady.

On your cheat day did you totaly go overboard

Yup, cheat day was a free for all at my house. :) In hindsight I would NOT do that. CHeat day should NOT be a free for all. It made results take longer. Cheating should actually be done in a well planned out manner for maximum benefit, not just eating whatever whenever.

WOW.. that's all I can say! You look fantastic Daisy Girl and i'm sure these pics have motivated numerous people on these boards :) I know you've motivated me more that's for sure!

8 LONG but valuable pages of information, to say the least (I think everyone else has said and asked what I would have).

In sum DaisyGirl... awesome transformation. Kudos to you girl, you look dam good!

:)

you are an inspiration! I now know it is possible. Thanks for the motivation.

How big is the potato? I'm not really sure about ounces and stuff like that.

What type of protein shake are you taking?

Were you taking any type of supplements?

My problem is working out. I also do cardio and weights. Its SUGAR...and other things :-)

Again, you look fantastic!

What I had been doing was AM cardio 5x per week and lifting 3x a week. This got the excess fat off, and I maintained my muscle mass but built no extra muscle. I actually lost the 30lbs in 4 months, but in the last 2 months have focused on building muscle. So now I am changing my workouts and what I am eating now has changed a little.

This is basically what I ate for 4 months straight, with one cheat day a week.

Meal 1: (post cardio)
1/2 - 3/4 cup Cream of Wheat with cinnamon and splenda
1 whole egg, 5 egg whites

Meal 2:
Protein Shake

Meal 3:
4oz Chicken
3-5oz Red Potato
Almonds

Meal 4: (usually post lifting)
Protein Shake

Meal 5:
4oz Chicken
Green Beans or Salad (no limit)

Meal 6: (before bed)
Protein Shake
Natty PB

I dont have as much as lose as you did, I only need to lose about 15lbs to be satisfied and at my goal weight. Your pictures just prove what hard work can do :) thank you

There was no aditional supplementation during this time period. All I took was protein powder and Hydroxycut. The clean diet did 99% of the work.

I seen your pics and you look great. I was wondering what your workout schedule was? I'm just starting and I'm doing 6 days at the gym 3 weight training and 3 cardio. I feel like I should be doing maybe less cardio and more weights but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

My workout plan is on one of the polsts in the eariler part of this thread. BUT, I do not recommend following it. I was cutting fat for something specific, and muscle loss was not a concern. Also, I have a body type that holds onto muscle VERY easily, even in a calorically deprived state.

After losing the initial fat, I started cutting abck on cardio and upping weights - and gained some weight back, but lost more BF - and looked much better.

I really like the routine of:

Sun - Rest
Mon - HIIT, 30 min, abs
Tues - Chest shoulders triceps
Weds - HIIT, 30 min, abs
Thurs - back, biceps
Fri - HIIT, 30 min, abs
Sat - legs, 30-45 min moderate cardio

I do not think extensive steady-state cardio is the best choice for fat loss. Yes, it has it's place, but HIIT is awesome.

This looks pretty good. I seem to build muscle rather quickly and for that I'm thankful. LOL I have been doing ab work every day except on Sunday's and that's my day of rest. I am going to be doing some cardio nothing to intense on my wt days and then do my regular cardio and hit it hard on those days. LOL Did I make sense???LOL

Can't believe I am posting these pics, but things B Fold said to me motivated me to do so. :) This is just a reminder of what a clean diet and smart training can do for a body. My diet was all clean foods, no drugs, and I trained my ass off (quite literally!).

You look great!! I have a question-about a clean diet. I told someone I eat lots of seafood-and shrimp is my all time favorite. She said that shrimp, or any seafood, is not a clean protein. What did this mean? It has no fat; it certainly is not processed with salts or sugars. and I do not if I should really say this here-but shrimp cannot be fed steroids so that it grows faster so the fisherman get bigger profits-so what is so bad about seafood?

Just to say, I am concerned about the health affects and possible appearance changes that can result in steroids they now put in plants and farm animals.

Can anyone tell me more?

I am not Daisy but seafood is very clean if prepared correctly with out excess butter, oils, sauces etc. This "someone" is telling you stuff needs to buy a clue. Good thing is your actually smart enough to question her "advice." :)

Some people get uppity with large quantities of shellfish (you'll hear all about - oh my cholesterol YAHDA YAHDA) and other fish it's about the mercury so you'd have to limit farm raised fish and eat more wild. As for it being - not clean, other than what QT already noted I'm not sure what else it might mean.

Just as a note EGGS (organic even better) are a great source of protein as well.

One thing to consider is that shrimp & lobster are bottom feeders. Lobster is also very rich so from a "diet" point of view, I wouldn't make those the regular part of the diet but probably more the "cheat meal" part of the diet.

THANKS, I APPRECIATE ANYONE'S LEGITIMATE ANSWERS TO ANY OF MY QUESTIONS WHEN I TALK ABOUT SEAFOOD-I LIKE SHRIMP TO BE BOILED, AND FISH, I LIKE IT TO BE BARBEQUED ON A CHARCOAL BAR B QUE PIT GRILL. I LIKE VEGGIES THIS WAY TOO-I WILL PUT THEM ON A STICK.

DOES A "CLEAN FOOD" MEAN FREE FROM ADDITIVES AND THE LESS INGREDIENTS AS POSSIBLE? THAT IS WHAT I LEARNED FROM THAT POSTS I WAS READING LAST NIGHT. I WAS VERY SUPRISED TO FIND OUT HEALTHY DIET IS NOT NECESSARILY A CLEAN DIET. I WILL USE THE BASTING SAUCE WHEN BAR B QUEING-BUT GENERALLY DRESSINGS AND SAUCES "TAKE AWAY" FROM THE TASTE. AND WHAT DO YOU THINK OF SUBWAYS SALADS-WITHOUT THE DRESSINGS? IS THAT CLEAN FOODS? AS I SAID IN ANOTHER POSTS-SUBWAY IS DOING SOMETHING SECRETIVE AND THEY WILL NOT LET THEIR SECRET OUT. AS FAR AS SAYING "WE USE FRESH VEGGETABLES" MY SALADS AT HOME DO NOT TASTE LIKE THAT.

Princess,

A safe rule of thumb with clean foods is to avoid items that come out of boxes, jars and tin containers, some exceptions - rice and tuna (tuna can contain mercury though but I wouldn't let that make you crazy).

If you eat dairy - milk and cottage cheese would be another exception.

Any green veggie is good - as well as the colored version of those veggies.
Root veggies - also good but eat more green than root.
Tomato - actually a fruit - also good
Onions are very good for you as is garlic.

Animal flesh - less additives the better (hormones and antibiotic - can become expensive though)

Eggs - also very good

Nuts - great fat and protien source

Fruits - depends on your diet - fresh is always best and berries are a choice

As far as eating out - Subway and Panera Bread - although a better choice they do contain sugar and they are high in sodium.

Oh speaking of fish - can't BBQ - grab some foil and salsa (make your own if poss) place the fish on the foil put a layer of salsa wrap like a package on pop it in the over 10-15 minutes later - VOILA very tasty

yep..what she said.

2 other Rule of Thumbs

1 - Shop perimeter of the grocey store(bakeries aside) - that is where the good stuff can generally be found

2 - Avoid anything white:

bread
rice
pasta
sugar
dairy
