So whats the final consensus. Does smoking speed up your metabolism?

I dont personally think you should smoke any SPEED.....

although i do have freinds that do and they are very skinny......

Nicotine being a stimulant will obviously increase metabolism initially, but prolonged use will slow all bodily functions, including digestion, metabolism, and circulation. Aside from that, it is extremely dangerous, sixty milligrams of nicotine taken at one time will kill the average adult human being by paralyzing breathing. It's about as lethal as cyanide. The reason it doesn't kill smokers quickly is that they take it in tiny doses, which are quickly metabolized and excreted by the body.

It also slows down muscle repair and overall growth of tissue, since your body also need O2 for consumption for energy a decrease is not exactly what you want in your system.

Im not a smoker but I would think that it would, considering that it speeds the heart rate{HR},but it also cuases more accumulation of lactic acid in anerobic and aerobic activity so I would not take the trade off.

exactly. Plus all the money you waste on this shit (that could be used to buy gear lol). It's just not compatible with the BB lifestyle.......

Yeah, I tend to smoke when I get stressed out. All of these questions were brought on by me loosing an inch or so around my weight in the last two weeks. The only thing I changed was I started smoking again. So I was curious to what smoking actually does to your metabolism. Anyway, I think the stress may have played a part in my inch loss also. Thanks for the help guys.

I alway thoughhat the reason people gained weight when they quit smoking was because they needed to get the fix from another place and they just went to food. Smoking is like an oral fixation, eating can substitute for it as well.

I am sure that the nicotine may do something for you but I have nevr heard of any studythat said it speeds upmetabolism.

Anyone have a surce for this data....I would like to know for sure!

I don't know about its abilities to speed up the metabolism, but it surely supresses appetide. I know it from personal experience;)

BIG E, do a simple search, for nicotine AND thermogenesis, on Medline or Pubmed...there should be numerous articles on this topic.

Nicotine increases metabolism in a similar manner as caffeine, it stimulates the release of norepinephrine.

NIMROD, I have never heard of this effect, please show any references to this effect.

Nicotine's acute toxicity is a non-issue, since nobody dies from acute poisoning. Cigarettes only contain around 1mg each, so there no way in hell someone is going to smoke 3 packs at once. If they do then it is simply evolution removing the mentally weak from the species.

Please do not misconstrue this post and think that I advocate smoking; I do not. But nicotine is now available by itself and is not the harmful agent contained in smoke. I believe that nicotine has some uses in dieting and possible long term mental health.

Smoking is an excellent weight loss supplement. When you are in the later stages of lung cancer you will be shredded to the bone.
